Meet Chakayla of Stylishly Decadent!!
Location: North Carolina
What or who inspired you to be a fashion blogger?
During my freshman year of college in 2009, I had finally decided to go natural and big chop! At that point in time, I was attending a predominantly white, affluent university and I was definitely the outlier! Naturally being a shy introvert, I decided to create a tumblr blog which then turned into my first blog called Classic.Raw.Beauty. to help rebuild my self-esteem and showcase my love for fashion and retail.
Do you blog full-time, for fun, as a hobby? Share your evolution!
I have been on this blog journey for almost six years! During those six years I have used blogging as a passion project/college hobby! After finding out I was pregnant during my senior year of college, I decided to take some time off and focus on graduating and preparing for the real world and motherhood! In January 2015, I thought it was time to for my son to see how I make my aspirations and dreams become a reality… and that is when my new blog, Stylishly Decadent, came to life!
What is your favorite asset? Your legs, arms, waist? How do you play that up?
I LOVE my legs! I adore wearing mini skirts and dresses that allow a little leg to peek through! There is nothing wrong with a little LEG ACTION, especially during the spring and summer seasons!
What are the challenges, if any, you face in being plus-size?
One of the challenges of being plus-size, from my perspective, is not being fully proportionate like my curvy counterparts! If I find a banging jumpsuit that fits my curves and waist PERFECTLY, 9 times out of 10 I am lacking the gifts in the bust area. This may sound silly and a bit vain, but I do not let this hold me back from accentuating and loving my curves in every outfit I put together. All I can say is … thank GOODNESS for Wonder Bras!
What’s your favorite thing about being plus-size?
My favorite thing about being plus-size is making a statement and not being afraid to do so. When I walk into a room, the first few things I want people to notice are my HUGE, vivacious hair, my smile and honestly, my appreciation of my curves. No matter if the dress I have on is a flowy maxi, long bodycon, or A-Line fit, I LOVE how being plus-size can be a positive statement that I can share with others!
What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger? A plus size fashion blogger?
Wow, this is an awesome question! First, I love blogging because of the creative freedom I have! I work in the agency world, and I am in charge of fulfilling projects and assignments according to the likes/dislikes of our clients. As a blogger, I can do and say anything I want … and that is truly beautiful! Second, I love being a plus-size blogger because of fabulous women like Nadia Aboulhosn, Marie Denee, Gabi Gregg, Kiah of From the Rez to the City and Inez of Style Chic 360! Each of these women have continued to inspire me to be uniquely … ME! There is no other Chakayla of Stylishly Decadent, so it is up to me to represent and stand up for my curvy girls through honest style tips, conversations and personal engagement!
Who/what are your favorite designers/brands?
I absolutely adore ASOS, Forever 21, H&M, Nasty Gal and Boohoo! Describe your personal style.
My personal style and I have been on a CRAZY journey together! From wearing only tight and short things in college to total vintage hoarder and now … an eclectic soul! I will forever love shopping retail, but my first love will always be thrifting! I love having a statement piece be the center of attention and letting the outfit speak for itself.
Which blogger inspire you? Plus or straight size! Any bloggers currently on your radar?
Gabi Gregg of GabiFresh! I have been riding with Gabi when she was in Chicago blogging as Young, Fat and Fabulous! She grabbed my attention when she partnered with Forever21 during the re-release of Forever21+! She is an amazing example of what hard work, dedication and persistence looks like!
What do you think about here plus size fashion is today, versus a few years back?
Plus-size fashion is more trend focused now, thank goodness! If I saw another ditzy floral print dress with a ruffled hem, I would have jumped off a cliff! I love how brands are using the voices of the plus-size community to rethink what it means to be a fashion- forward brand that supports fashionable curvy women!
What do you think or hear from readers, is one of the biggest myths about plus size fashion?
I think the biggest misconception is that plus-size women all want to look and dress alike. As we both know, this is totally ridiculous! Being plus-size is not a cult people! We like being different and thinking outside of the fashion limits just like anyone else of any size!
Are you working on anything or have anything to share? Anything else you want The Curvy Fashionista’s readers to know?
I am currently working on releasing my first e-book that teaches readers how to maximize their wardrobes through interactive style consultations! I am so excited to share this new venture with you all!
Lastly, what does Curvy.Confident.Chic mean to you?
Curvy.Confident.Chic means kicking butt and taking numbers! Being an independent curvy woman, who loves looking confidently chic is truly beautiful! I remember feeling super self-conscious and being afraid to challenge the status quo! As of 2015, I believe that without risk, true success cannot fully develop and blossom!
