I am here to offer you tips for shopping the best plus size selections in thrift stores and what to look for while doing it.
3 Tips for Thrifting When You Are Plus Size
Tip one for thrifting plus size fashion: Have a Game Plan in Mind for What You want to thrift During Your Search.
Before heading to the thrift store, evaluate your wardrobe and have a game plan in mind for what you may be looking for during your adventure. For instance, if you’re interested in adding more statement skirts to your wardrobe during the Fall months, make it a point to start in the ‘Skirt Section’ of the thrift store. Likewise, if you’re looking for more blouses to add to your wardrobe, make it a point to start in the “Top Section” of the thrift store. Have a game plan in mind before heading to the thrift store while reducing stressors and increasing your likelihood of finding what you’re looking for during your adventure to the thrift store.
tip two for thrifting plus size fashion: Shop the entire racks because there may be hidden plus size selections.
If you’re heading for a particular size in a section or on the rack, what I learned quickly in my thrift journey, is to keep your eyes peeled on the entire rack for plus-size selections. Due to the high trafficking of thrift stores and shoppers who change their minds at the last minute, there may be items that are either quickly stuffed into a rack or put back in the wrong ‘size section’ of the rack. It never hurts, especially if you have the time to comb through the entire racks to find what could become some of your most prized possessions.
Tip three for thrifting plus size fashion: Round of Applause for Two-Piece Sets; Worn Together or Separately.
Don’t you love two-piece sets? Something about having the option of pairing them together or separately evokes a sense of boldness and stylish options. Typically found next to the evening gowns and prom dresses, be sure to keep your eyes on the “Sets Section” of the thrift store for bold statement pieces you can pair together or separately, such as blazer, tropical, and pants sets you can style a wide variety of ways. You never know. These two-piece sets can be the size you’re looking for during your adventure. As someone who heads to thrift stores often, this section of the store has been my favorite, especially when it comes to finding some of my most treasured plus-size sets.
From statement blouses to two-piece sets, thrift stores are making it their mission to ensure size and section inclusivity. On top of that, thrift stores are another avenue to ensuring sustainable options are at the forefront of the fashion industry. Wouldn’t you agree? Comment below with your favorite tip(s).
Great deals aren’t found only in stores. One of my daughters has found great offers in Craigslist, Facebook’s Marketplace, and local online yard sale groups. I have found some in estate sales.
Be prepared for the “feast or famine” phenomenon when thrifting. You may find nothing that suits you one week, but the next week might find nearly an entire wardrobe.
