The recent Los Angeles wildfires have caused unprecedented devastation, with over 40,000 acres burned, at least 24 fatalities, and more than 12,000 structures damaged or destroyed. Governor Gavin Newsom has described these fires as potentially the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. Entire communities have been displaced, with thousands of residents seeking shelter, clothing, and basic necessities as they try to rebuild their lives.

In the midst of these efforts, plus size individuals often face unique challenges in accessing resources, particularly clothing. Traditional donation efforts sometimes overlook the need for inclusive sizing, leaving many struggling to find options that meet their needs. For plus size fire victims, the lack of accessible clothing can compound an already dire situation, highlighting the importance of targeted relief efforts and inclusive donations.

To bridge this gap, several organizations and fashion brands are stepping up, recognizing the importance of inclusivity in disaster relief. Brands known for carrying plus sizes are actively participating in drives, offering essential items for those who need them most. These efforts are critical in ensuring that all individuals, regardless of size, receive the support and dignity they deserve during this challenging time.

Want to know what to donate?

Kat Eaves, a sustainable plus size stylist, shares with us that โ€œeveryone wants to donate and that is really truly beautiful, but we donโ€™t want to leave the donation centers in a spot where they are overwhelmed and have to deal with excess. The best way to approach this is remembering that this is a marathon and not a sprint. The majority of people are living out of suitcases not closets. There will be a greater need down the line. So, follow the organizations who are doing the work and wait for their guidance, following the call for what they are looking for. In the meantime, throw support to the people on the ground who are the best equipped to provide goods to plus size folks.โ€

This means, in addition to clothing, think about donating socks, wide fit shoes, bras, underwear and hygiene products and toiletries.

As a fellow Southern California based brand, we wanted to share how you can help, along with a list of brands and organizations leading the charge for plus-size-friendly relief efforts.

In addition to these plus size specific brands and drives, there is a list of beauty brands that are activating and supporting those who have been impacted by the fires. Make sure you also check in with fellow influencers on social!

By focusing on inclusive relief efforts and supporting brands that cater to diverse sizing, we can ensure that all individuals affected by the wildfires receive the assistance they need during this challenging time. For the plus size community in Los Angeles and beyond, this is not just about donationsโ€”itโ€™s about solidarity and ensuring that everyone has access to resources that honor their dignity and needs.

If youโ€™re a part of the LA plus size community and beyond and are in need of immediate support, local organizations such as the LA Mission and Baby2Baby are equipped to assist with clothing and essential items. If you need a list of resources, the LATimes has created a great list of resources, that include both free and discounted food, lodging, and financial resources. ย

For those outside the area looking to help, consider making financial contributions, donating inclusive-sized clothing, or volunteering time to local relief efforts. Together, we can make a difference, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Letโ€™s show the strength and resilience of our community by standing with those affected and ensuring that inclusivity remains at the heart of all our efforts.
