This year has already been a lot and we’re only one month in. To add to it, ‘love month’ is here and adding pressure. But just because I don’t have a Valentine this year does not mean that I don’t love anyone… because after all, I exist! So, can we talk a little bit about cultivating self love?

Loving myself has been one of my biggest battles in full transparency. I’ve always struggled with being confident in myself, my appearance, my dreams, and everything else under the sun.

I remember the first time I was called ‘fat’. I was in kindergarten at recess and a boy that was a year older than me told me I was too fat to play the game that the rest of the kids were playing. Since then, loving myself has been a struggle I have always dealt with.

However, over the past three years specifically, I have fallen in love with myself, and if you need help doing the same, I have some tips from my own experience, because ultimately, self love comes first.

My Top Tips On Cultivating Self Love

Prioritize yourself first.

I noticed that when I didn’t have any self love, it was because I was too busy giving that love to others and had none left at the end of the day for me. I started to make time for myself to spend time with myself and do what I wanted to do.

If I wanted to go see a movie that no one else wanted to see, I went. If I wanted to binge-watch my favorite reality show, I did. Even if it was just going for a walk, I took care of myself with the same care I was giving to others.

Celebrate every win.

There was a quote that came up on my TikTok for you page the other day that said, “I never celebrated my wins because it always felt like an obligation to achieve them.” Boy did that hit home.

When something good happens, celebrate it, no matter what it is. Wake up in a good mood? Celebrate. Take a cute picture while getting drinks with your friends? Celebrate. Get a promotion? Celebrate. It truly does not matter the level of the event, just celebrate.

Take pride in yourself.

I noticed in my final moments of undergrad when it felt like the stress of everything was piling up, that I was putting less effort into my appearance. This goes for my outfits, hair, makeup, everything.

Taking an extra couple of minutes in the morning to feel better about yourself is so worth it. I love wearing what most consider ‘full glam’ and when I don’t wear my normal makeup, my confidence notices.

Do what you love.

If you love doing something, then do it! I love traveling and have often learned more about myself when I do travel, this in turn helps me learn how to best love myself as I know myself better.

Treat yourself.

Every so often, treat yourself. Especially during February when love is everywhere, it can be a bit overwhelming. If you’re feeling down and struggling with comparison (like I often do), treat yourself to a fun cocktail, a coffee, a sweet treat, a bouquet of flowers, or whatever you so desire.

You deserve just as much love as the next person, but loving yourself is where it begins. It’s often easier said than done and can be hard, but starting with the little things can make a big difference in the way you love yourself.
