What made you want to become a fashion blogger? What led you to it?
After our dress code at work was pushed a few levels up, I was in desperate need of finding pieces that were practical and affordable, BUT I needed them to be fashionable. As a petite plus size woman, I attacked the internet to find them. I went to store after store, and it was very frustrating and disheartening when the pieces didn’t fit correctly. I then improvised by using long blouses and tunics as dresses or incorporating vests and belts for a better fit. I do know a few stitches and was able to alter lengths for a better fit.
I then found myself replacing 90% of my closet with pieces I found in stores, on-line- the majority as “gently used” finds from various groups and eBay. As I became more familiar with the designers and had a closet full of (new/gently used) items to mix and match, I decided to share my findings with others that found themselves in need of inspiration – be it as petites or plus size. My style ranges from spikes and latex, to classic retro and bounce right back to corporate wear. My readers will always find something they like or an outfit they never would have thought to wear.
What are the challenges, if any, you face in being petite and plus-size?
The main challenge is guessing the correct size on certain cuts/styles/fabric. I may wear up to 3 different sizes from one designer and/or store/site, and I won’t know until I try it on. I have wide shoulders and am busty but am short framed. I have wide hips and an apron belly that is a factor to this size range.
This is the reason why I always include my measurements at the time of each review so that those with similar measurements and height will be able to order the correct size the first time around.
What’s your favorite thing about being petite and plus-size?
The biggest, most favorite thing is… I get mistaken for a much younger gal! It’s very interesting how [a shorter] height is attributed to youth, but it is. Add a strong sense to express ourselves through our clothing/style, and I feel that many of us are much more adventurous and daring. There’s nothing more invigorating than breaking some rules.
What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger? A petite-plus fashion blogger?
After all the work, time, effort… late nights and early morning… computer crashes… site glitches… and the random acts of negativity for being public is: The ladies and men that write, comment or come up to me at events with a glint/fire in their spirit saying how I’ve helped them in one way or another is the BEST fruit of our labor.
I set out to leave a digital foot print for others to find. There’s someone sitting at their computer and searching for “petite plus size blogger” and I hope that my work will pop up on their list. They will see my pictures and identify themselves by these two things alone. It truly goes beyond fashion and more as a form of empowerment. Knowing that there is this little 40 year old Latina who’s as tall as a child, yet they can feel confidence from the images.
Who/what are your favorite designers/brands?
I absolutely love Kiyonna, Hell Bunny, Cherry Velvet and IGIGI to name a few. I wear their designs at least once a week. I have many more designers I long to wear one day such as Fernando Gantier, MonifC, LaLa Belle, Marina Rinaldi and so many more that my list is endless.
Describe your personal style.
I love to be glammed up! I wear vintage looks to work frequently. Large accessories are my normal wear and heels… oh I can’t walk without heels. For a night out painting the town, I like latex, spikes and even higher heels. On “Mommy” weekends I wear summer dresses or my large collection of Hello Kitty shirts and shorts with my spiked flats or spiked tennis shoes.
Any bloggers currently on your radar?
I follow many bloggers. I find inspiration and strength from them and share their posts on my social media. My readers are not all petite like I am and featuring a blogger of their height and size really increases my purpose in this world. My long time favorites are Garner Style and The Curvy Fashionista. They inspired me and introduced me to many of the plus size designers.
I also follow you (Style Cassentials) because I just LOVE your style and we’re very similar in height and body type.
Anything else you want The Curvy Fashionista’s readers to know?
The blogger’s main purpose is to share information and experience. It takes a lot from our lives to do so, and at times we don’t know if it’s helping. It’s a great boost to our drive when you as a reader comments and shares our work. This helps tremendously in our paths and goals and helps concentrate more on what you the reader wants to know.
Lets support each other and be kind as there is enough negativity in this world that we already face on the daily. Most of all, let’s live each day with greater Acceptance and Confidence and remember we’re here to help each other along the way.
