Ask the Readers: Plus Size Culottes- Yes or No?

I have been watching and playing around with trying this out, curious to see where you are in this thought process. As we have already talked about the plus size spring trends, there are always micro trends that end up stealing the spotlight and for spring, one of those I noticed? Plus Size Culottes.

What are Culottes?

These are, as defined by Stylite: “Culottes hang-like-a-skirt-but-is-actually-pants silhouette, it’s tailored, waist defining, and leg-elongating so long as you find the right cut.”  Some are shorter, above the knee, and right at the knee, but my fave is the midi length. You see, there have been a few versions that I have found, and this trend intrigues me. On the runway for spring 2014, Elena Miro fashioned a board short of sorts. And I was quite curious about this, and still am. I think I could see myself kind of having fun with this… Maybe. But then I saw more elevated and evolved versions of this short into the culottes of days past over on You Look Fab, and I got a little excited.  Like these:

BUT, then I peeped SuppleChic Rocking out in her Midi Culottes when looking for images and I KNEW I had to share her look!

So then I thought, as I peeped the Boohoo Plus Version and the ASOS Curve options, that I could really rock these plus size culottes.

What is even more exciting is that as this trend is emerging on the straight side of fashion, there are plus size retailers hooking it up for us. THANK YOU! I envision this as the perfect alternative to the midi skirt and to wide leg pants. I could see these rocked with stilettos and a slouchy tee, a blazer and a stacked pump, or a fitted crop top and strappy heels. There are a few ways that I could see this going… And I can see these transitioning into fall perfectly with stiletto boots. Mmhmmm. It is all about options and variety here. There is something quite polished, sophisticated, edgy, sporty, and sassy about these… and yes, they are not for everyone or everyone’s style. But the fact that there are options and new silhouettes that we can play in too? THIS is an amazing mark in progress. I could also see this in a monochromatic look. I am here for that. MMHMM. I want a suit in this. I saw one at an event I went to. This girl was rocking the HELL out of this look. Color me inspired and I am going for it. But this is an ‘Ask the Reader’ and I am curious…

So now, I ask you: Plus Size Culottes- Yes or No?

  1. Yes…but only with a heel…otherwise you risk looking like one of the mean witches from The Wiz lol…or an oompa loompa.

    1. I completely agree. I think they’d look amazing with a high heeled sandal.

For me, since I’m on the shorter side, I think finding the perfect length for my height will be a bit challenging. Or I can get them altered for me. (-_-)

  2. I think they are much more flattering than capri pants since they are the same width all the way down and yes with a heel!

  3. Yes, yes and a thousand times yes. Though I have to say, I actually prefer a good palazzo pant, which is also back this year. I already have 4 of those in my closet. They are basically the same thing, just longer.

I love both of these styles when I was a teenager, and I am so excited they are back in style. I had a really awesome culotte jumper.

  4. I am SO in love with this look. Unfortunately my thighs rub together and its just not cute to be squatting every 6 steps to ungather material.
I will watch yall with envy in my heart. LOL

  5. They seem to rock on some, but not on others. I say MAYBE, depending on your body type and Try before your Buy!!

  6. I say YES! Except these are the type of pants that would work best with a heel. And my feet do not do heels. Maybe if I could find a super comfy pair of ankle strap heels, I’d go for it.

  7. no no no i would have to try a pair on to see. they are nice though, I love pants so again I would have to see. I tell you it hides and flattens parts that you have omg I have tried and failed. took them back and walked away. not only am i short but the way they fit they flatten my butt and highs and such its like concealing what I have!!!!.

  8. I love this look, I think I would need to try them on as I’m only 5’5″ and they might be too long for me.

  9. Love them – want them but don’t do heels…. Just had major knee surgery. What shoes do I wear?????

  10. No way! You have these women wearing heels with them. Trying to wear this and heels while pushing kids around in a stroller and dragging other items, and also catching the bus while trying to stay cool. You fashion people always thinking women are always wearing clothing, with hands on their hips, one side of butt sticking out to the side and twirling around in high heels which means you must travel by a car. No, join the real world. So why not with sandal and sneakers as I remember in my younger days, and they most had elastic in the back. It was a way of staying cool and transition from not wearing a dress, as society was not all that ready for women to wear pants, nor short.

    1. Well, not everyone has children and while this may not be a viable option for you, it is for some!
Real world? Living in California, everyone traveled by car, almost… it was incredulously difficult to do otherwise.
The ones that I have? They do have elastic in the back! 🙂 And I actually have a video releasing today about and showing me rocking them.
This was an ask the reader question, soooo not dictating to those who can or what they should wear. I am sorry if you felt offended by the question, but it is a trend that has moved some in one way or the other…

  11. I think they look great with heels, but since I don’t wear heels EVER, I’d never spend my money on something that doesn’t work with my wardrobe.
