Are we actually bringing back skinny jeans?
Skinny jeans, a fashion staple of the early 2000s, are reportedly making a comeback. This resurgence raises questions about trend cycles, inclusivity, and whether plus-size individuals should participate. Fashion is cyclical, and trends often resurface, reimagined for a new era. However, the return of skinny jeans presents a unique challenge, as this garment has historically been associated with a specific body type.
Following fashion trends is one of my hobbies, so naturally I follow a ton of influencers, and not too long ago Alix Earl shared that skinny jeans are BACK.
I remember growing up being told that skinny jeans weren’t for me as I have always been shorter in height and larger in clothing size than my peers, but baby I found a way to wear them because I was not going to be left out of trend!
When Justice had a pair of skinny jeans in my size, I took them home. As I got older and started shopping at non-children clothing stores, it got more difficult, because retailers did not have anyone over a size 2 in mind when creating a skinny jean.Â
They were always way too long on me, bunching at the bottom of my petite legs, but I wanted to be included, as most plus women do, so I dealt with it. Then, by the grace of God, skinny jeans were no longer ‘in’.

Should Plus Sizes Try Skinny Jeans Again?
Fashion should be a source of joy and self-expression, and everyone deserves the freedom to experiment with trends they find appealing. If a plus-size person feels confident and comfortable in skinny jeans, they should absolutely wear them. Style is personal, and individual preference should always take precedence over trend dictates.
However, it’s also important to acknowledge the potential pitfalls. Skinny jeans, by their very nature, are form-fitting and can accentuate certain body features. This can be a source of anxiety for some, particularly given the societal pressures and unrealistic beauty standards that often surround fashion. Moreover, finding well-fitting skinny jeans for plus-size bodies can be challenging. Many brands still prioritize smaller sizes, and the fit and proportions of plus-size versions may not always be ideal.
Mom jeans, boyfriend fit, wide leg, barrel, and more all took over quickly as styles of jeans and I was hesitant to the change at first, but now it’s basically all I own. The comfort of a wider-leg jean is one thing, but I would argue that a wider jean is more versatile to style.
Maybe it’s because I love the oversized look in general, but there is nothing more stunning than a wide leg jean, an oversized blazer, and a pointed-toe boot… that outfit is just chef’s kiss! While it could still work with a skinny jean, the overall vibe of the outfit would change.
Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to participate in the skinny jean trend rests solely with the individual. It’s crucial to prioritize comfort, confidence, and personal style. If the trend feels empowering and enjoyable, then by all means, embrace it. But if it triggers insecurities or feels forced, there’s no obligation to participate. Fashion should be about celebrating individuality, not conforming to restrictive norms. There are countless other stylish options available, and personal style should always be the guiding principle.
Skinny jeans coming back into style is by no means the end of the world, but now that I’ve seen other styles take over and given those a try, I know what looks best on my figure and what I will be wearing.
