Monif C. launched in 2005 after founder Monif Clarke, frustrated by the lack of stylish options for full-figured women, teamed up with her mother to build a label of her own. The brand became known for its unapologetically bold aesthetic — convertible dresses, bright colors, and some of the first bikinis and crop sets cut specifically for plus size bodies — and has been worn by celebrities including Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, and Gabourey Sidibe. In recent years it has leaned further into swimwear and lingerie while remaining a Black, woman-owned cornerstone of the plus size industry.
