What made you want to become a fashion blogger?
In 2009, I stumbled upon Gabi Gregg’s blog, then known as Young, Fat and Fabulous. I instantly fell in love with her and her blog, and was inspired by all the beautiful outfits she was wearing. At that time, I never thought I could wear them, which is funny because if you knew me before 2010, fashion just wasn’t a possibility for me. Back then, I couldn’t find clothes that fit, and I also didn’t know where I could shop for anything that I actually liked. That all changed after looking at Gabi’s blog, and it led me to finding a ton of other amazing blogs (The Curvy Fashionista, Nicolette Mason, Cupcake’s Clothes, & Curvy Canadian to name a few)! In 2010, I started a private blog, which only certain friends were allowed to view. This blog served as an outlet for me and acted as a way to watch my style change and evolve. Finally, I decided to take the leap and make my blog public in 2013, when one of my best friends, Bianca Venerayan (who happens to be one half of the amazing duo, Kastor & Pollux) and my boyfriend, Jayson, convinced me to go for it! I’ve never looked back since.
What are some challenges you face being plus-size?
Challenges I personally face being plus size would definitely be that I don’t have enough options!! Don’t get me wrong, I am so happy and grateful for all the amazing options I have now, I just hate when I see something in straight sizes that I know I would have purchased without question but can’t since it doesn’t come in my size. I’m so happy with the growth and expansion that the plus size industry has created, I’m looking forward to more of this continuous growth! Another challenge that I always overcome is the negativity that I can sometimes get; I’m a strong believer that you can and should wear anything you want. I say screw all the fashion “rules” that people believe they’re obligated to tell you. Wear that crop top, fatkini, short skirt, hell, wear a bra as a top if YOU want to!!! People have told me that I should consider wearing shapewear more often, I told them **in not so nice words** to screw off. Just because we are plus size doesn’t mean we shouldn’t wear whatever we want to!
What’s your favorite thing about being plus-size?
My favorite thing about being plus size would definitely be the incredibly supportive plus size community!!! Prior to starting my blog I had no idea about the body positive community (I wish I knew sooner). I’ve met the most amazing people and have made some of the greatest friends through all of this. I’ve gained more confidence and self love in the past year than I have my whole life. I’ve learned to love myself, and realize that all bodies should be celebrated!!!
What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger?
My favorite thing about being a blogger is being able to share my love for fashion. Growing up I never was able to partake in anything fashion related, that is until I found Gabi and other plus size bloggers’ blogs! I was so inspired by all of them, which led to me being interested in fashion. It felt incredible knowing that I wouldn’t have to worry/cry/stress over finding a prom dress. Thanks to all of the amazing plus size bloggers, I found out about ASOS (which is where I got not just 1, but 4 different options for prom)! I started my blog to watch my own style change in private, and then I decided to publicize it so that hopefully I would be able to inspire and share my love of fashion with others who felt just like I had. I get a warm tingle in my heart when I read any comments/emails/anything telling me how I’ve inspired or helped anyone – it’s definitely the best part about blogging.
What are your favorite brands/designers?
My favorite designers/brands are definitely New Look, Forever21+, ASOS Curve, Addition Elle, Urban Outfitters and Modcloth! These are definitely some of my wardrobe staples! I’ve also recently really fallen in love with two amazing Danish brands, Carmakoma and Junarose!!
Describe your personal style.
I’m not really too sure how I would describe my personal style. It can change in an instant! I love dressing super cute and adorable but then can change into a fancier look for the evening. I also love to live in sweaters and beanies all Winter. I also tend to gravitate to towards anything sparkly/shiny/iridescent.. I can’t really describe my style, I just wear anything/everything I like!
What bloggers are currently on your radar?
The Curvy Fashionista is my #1 go to blog for all plus size news! I’ve also been keeping my eyes on Anisa Crament, Curvy Canadian, From the Corners of the Curve, onyx-eye, Sticky Sweet Danish, and GabiFresh of course!
Anything else you want The Curvy Fashionista’s readers to know?
You should never listen to the limitations people try to put on you. Do exactly what YOU want, wear anything and everything you love! Screw what other people might think! There is only one you, and you deserve to live your life exactly how you want!
