Did you know AKIRA is making some major changes to its plus size fashion? And no, we’re not just talking about adding a few more sizes to the rack.

We’re talking about updated sizing standards, reworked fits, more attention to proportions, and an expanded selection of the bold, unapologetic fashion that AKIRA plus size shoppers know and love.

Now, if you’ve ever fallen in love with an outfit online, added it to your cart, and crossed your fingers that the fit would actually cooperate when it arrived, you already know why this news caught our attention.

Because finding a fabulous outfit is one thing. Finding one that fits your bust, hips, arms, and waist without requiring an emergency appointment with your tailor? That’s a different conversation.

And apparently, AKIRA has been listening.

The fashion retailer is updating its extended-size offerings, with improvements informed by customer feedback, plus size focus groups, and a more intentional approach to designing for larger bodies.

Naturally, we had questions. How far will the sizing go? Will there actually be more plus size styles? And can shoppers expect better options both online and in stores?

So, we went straight to the source.

Why We’re Paying Attention to AKIRA’s Plus Size Changes

Here at The Curvy Fashionista, we’ve spent years (17, to be exact) covering the evolution of plus size fashion, celebrating brands that expand access while holding them accountable for the promises they make to our community.

As the founder and editor-in-chief of TCF, I’ve watched brands enter the plus size market, experiment with extended sizing, and sometimes struggle to understand that making clothing bigger doesn’t necessarily mean making it fit better.

We’ve also heard directly from our readers about the frustration of finding the perfect statement piece, only to discover that their size isn’t available or that the proportions simply don’t work.

So, when we learned that the bold, trend-driven, and exciting brand, AKIRA was updating its plus size fit standards and assortment, we wanted to dig a little deeper. Because this isn’t just about another collection dropping. It’s about whether more plus size shoppers will actually be able to participate in the fashion they’ve been admiring.

And that’s a conversation worth having.

Wait, So What Exactly Is Changing With AKIRA Plus Size Fashion?

For starters, AKIRA is taking another look at how its clothing fits.

According to the brand, it has updated its size chart and grading standards to create more consistent sizing between sizes. And there’s one particular detail that made us raise an eyebrow, in a good way.

Every extended-size style is now fitted on a 1X model before production.

Why does that matter?

Because simply enlarging a straight-size pattern doesn’t always account for the ways proportions change across bodies. A jacket might fit perfectly through the waist but pull across the bust. Pants might have enough room in the hips but not enough rise. And don’t even get us started on bodysuits that seem to forget torsos come in different lengths.

AKIRA says its updated approach pays particular attention to:

  • Sleeve fit and arm proportions
  • Waist and hip measurements
  • Pant rises
  • Cup sizing and bust accommodation
  • Bodysuit coverage
  • The shape of woven and non-stretch garments

The brand is also adjusting graphics and statement details across sizes so that the original design doesn’t lose its impact.

Because if we’re buying a dramatic print, an oversized embellishment, or a statement-making silhouette, we want the full fashion moment. Thank you very much.

These are promising updates, although the real test will be how the garments fit once customers get their hands on them.

AKIRA Says Its Customers Inspired the Changes

We connected with Leah Kambic, AKIRA’s Design, Creative & Technical Design Manager, to understand what prompted the brand to revisit its extended-size offerings.

Her answer was refreshingly straightforward.

“We listened to our customers. Their feedback made it clear that we needed to improve both the fit and the selection offered in sizes 1X and above. We want more customers to see themselves in AKIRA and feel confident in clothes that reflect their personal style.”

Now, this is something we can appreciate.

For years, plus size shoppers have been asking fashion brands to pay attention to what we actually want to wear. Not another assortment of basics disguised as inclusivity. Not the same three silhouettes in a handful of colors.

We want the fashion.

The daring pieces. The interesting textures. The silhouettes that make us feel like the main character before we’ve even left the house.

And if you’ve shopped AKIRA before, you already know that subtlety isn’t exactly the brand’s calling card.

Which brings us to the next question.

Does AKIRA Plus Size Clothing Now Go Up to 4X?

Well, here’s where we need to get specific.

AKIRA has developed updated sizing standards covering XS through 4X, but the initial rollout of those updated standards is XS through 2X.

Yes, there’s a difference.

And we wanted to make sure our TCF readers understood exactly what that means.

Kambic explained:

“We’ve updated our sizing standards to cover XS–4X. We’re initially introducing the updated sizing in XS–2X, with the goal of expanding further as we gather customer feedback and learn how the new fit is working for them.”

So, while the brand has established standards for sizes up to 4X, that does not mean every style is currently available through 4X, or that a full 4X assortment has launched, yet.

For shoppers wearing 3X and 4X, that distinction is important.

We love seeing brands create a foundation for broader size inclusion. We also know that shoppers want to see those plans reflected in the clothes they can actually purchase.

At this stage, AKIRA has not provided a specific timeline for introducing the updated 3X and 4X offerings.

And we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on that.

But Will There Be More Plus Size Fashion to Actually Shop?

Because let’s be serious for a second.

Better fit is wonderful. But if the only options available in your size are a black dress, a pair of jeans, and a blouse that looks suspiciously like something you’d wear to a mandatory office meeting, we’re going to need a little more.

Thankfully, expanding the assortment is part of AKIRA’s plan.

When we asked whether the changes would mean more plus size clothing online and in stores, Kambic confirmed that the brand is working to broaden its selection.

“Yes! We held focus groups with our plus-size customers to better understand which styles they wanted more of, and we’ve used that feedback to expand our selection. Our goal is to offer more of the bold, trend-driven looks our customers love across a broader range of sizes.”

Focus groups with actual plus size customers?

We love to hear it.

And even more importantly, we love that the conversation isn’t limited to what fits, but also includes what shoppers want.

AKIRA says the expanded selection will bring more of its expressive silhouettes, statement details, and fashion-forward designs into extended sizes, while maintaining the same fabrics, trims, and quality standards used across the assortment.

For shoppers who enjoy dressing boldly, that’s an encouraging direction.

The brand hasn’t shared specific numbers showing how many additional styles will be available or how the assortment will be distributed among stores. Those details will be worth watching as the rollout progresses.

But the intention to provide more options is certainly welcome news.

And What Does AKIRA Want Us Wearing? Leah Has a Favorite.

Of course, we couldn’t have a conversation about AKIRA plus size options, without getting into the clothes.

We asked Kambic which look best represents the direction the brand is taking with its updated extended-size fashion.

And her pick? A little texture, a little attitude, and plenty of personality.

She chose the ALL OVER THE PLACE RUCHED MIDI SKIRT paired with the TOO GOOD FOR YOU FAUX OSTRICH LEATHER BUTTON DOWN.

One look at those names, and you already know we’re not discussing a quiet little outfit.

The tiger-print ruched skirt brings drama with its asymmetrical silhouette, while the faux ostrich leather button-down adds an edgy, textured finish.

It’s the kind of pairing that could turn a casual dinner invitation into a full-blown fashion occasion.

And really, who are we to argue?

Kambic shared:

“It captures what we want this collection to deliver: expressive, fashion-forward pieces that our customers feel confident wearing.”

And that’s the bigger point here.

Plus size fashion shouldn’t come with a watered-down version of a brand’s creative vision.

If AKIRA is known for making bold fashion statements, its plus size shoppers should have access to that same energy.

The clothes should be just as interesting, just as expressive, and designed with the same level of attention to detail.

Editor’s note: As with any fashion purchase, check the individual product’s available sizes and measurements before ordering, since the extended-size selection can vary by style.

Why This AKIRA Plus Size Update Matters

Here’s the thing about size inclusivity in fashion: we’ve moved well beyond the point where simply offering an XL or 1X deserves a standing ovation.

The conversation has evolved.

We’re talking about thoughtful design, proper grading, representation, accessibility, and fashion options that genuinely reflect the diversity of plus size bodies.

And perhaps most importantly, we’re talking about choice.

Because personal style doesn’t disappear after a certain dress size.

A woman who wears a 3X deserves the same opportunity to experiment with a dramatic sleeve, a bold print, or an edgy leather look as someone who wears a medium.

And she shouldn’t have to sacrifice her style to find something that fits.

AKIRA’s commitment to fitting extended-size styles on a 1X model, updating proportions, and gathering direct feedback from plus size shoppers suggests the brand understands that getting the fit right requires actual work.

That’s encouraging.

But we’re also interested in what comes next.

Will the updated fit deliver more consistency across different garment categories? How quickly will the revised sizing expand beyond 2X? And will customers see a meaningful increase in the number of extended-size styles available?

Those are the questions that will determine how much of an impact these changes make.

So, Is AKIRA Stepping Up Its Plus Size Fashion Game?

We’d say AKIRA is making some interesting moves, and we’re curious to see how they play out.

The updated fit standards, customer focus groups, and commitment to offering more statement-making fashion in extended sizes are all developments worth celebrating.

And we appreciate that the brand is talking about the details that matter, including garment construction, fit testing, and the actual preferences of its plus size customers.

But the real excitement will come when those changes translate into more clothing, more sizes, and more consistent shopping experiences.

Especially for the 3X and 4X shoppers who are still waiting to see what the next phase will bring.

In the meantime, you can explore the brand’s AKIRA extended-size clothing collection and see which looks are calling your name.

Now, we want to hear from you!

Have you shopped AKIRA’s plus size fashion before? How has the fit worked for you? Are you excited about these updates, or are you holding out until the expanded sizing reaches 3X and 4X?

And most importantly, what AKIRA styles would you love to see offered in a broader size range?

Sound off in the comments, because you already know we want to hear all about it!
