It has been a minute since I did one of these and with the varying questions, I thought I would address this a bit more formally and share a question I received and answer it! Shoot me your questions and who knows, you could see your question asked and answered here!
Here is today’s question:
Hi there!
I’m looking for the perfect white tshirt to wear under open sweaters, denim shirts, etc.
I often see cute outfits put together by people on Pinterest but I’m still on the hunt for the perfect white tshirt or even tank but I’d prefer tshirt…something a little longer to hide the belly, not too big and not too tight!
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Randi K.
Thank you Randi for your email and I totally understand what you mean! YES, it is possible and the perfect tees do exist! I have quite a stash of them, as they are the perfect essential, but even more important, I also have them in varying levels of quality. Some are seasonal (fast fashion) and others are such a great basic, that I invest a bit more on them to last me at least two years!
To answer your question, I want to first share the three basic tee silhouettes that I think are must haves in your closet and others that are MY essentials for my style! Are you ready?
TCFStyle Q+A: White Plus Size Layering Tees
The Tank
Tanks: Classic Tank Top from Forever 21, Soft Stretch Cami in Jersey from ASOS Curve, Mossimo Tank at Target, Classic Tank Top at Ashley Stewart
Like you, I love a great tank with length. Being that I am 5’8” probably has a bit to do with that!! I do not like items to sit too snug on my belly either! Where I buy my tanks? Get this…
Wal-Mart and Target. They run long, are colorfast (bright and won’t fade) and most of the time are pre-shrunken. I actually have tanks from target that have already lasted about two years and have seriously done its fair share of work. When I am buying them, I also buy them in doubles and in varying colors. NO SHAME. The price is great, they last a while, and I have some great essentials.
The Cap/Short Sleeve Tee
Tees: Off Shoulder Tee from ASOS Curve, Sejour V-Neck from Nordstrom, V-Neck rolled sleeve from Boohoo, Mesh shoulder Tee from ASOS Curve
For the basic colors, I spend a bit more and make sure that they do not shrink! One of my new fave brands to shop is Adea Luxury. It literally feels like butter and they have varying styles and colors to play in. It is like second skin, and will show off more curves than you may be used to, but this is great for wearing tucked into items- like flared skirts! I also enjoy tops from Rachel Pally, Three Dots, ASOS Curve, and SOOOOOMETIMESSS Forever 21 (only if they are longer in the body). Also, do not count out the Hanes Tee packs. YES. I said it. If it is more finished, they opt as a great layering piece for your wardrobe as well!
The Long Sleeve Tee
Long Sleeve Tops: White Long Sleeve Tee by Evans, Ribbed Knit Top at Forever 21, Sejour Crew-neck Long Sleeve Tee at Nordstrom, V-Neck Tee at Torrid
I can never have too many of these and honestly, there are only two places, well now three that I shop for these. Three dots- they never shrink or fade, last for eons and have a generous silhouette. As I mentioned before, Adea Luxury is a different fabrication, a bit dressier, and more body conscious. Lastly, I stay and shop at both Walmart and Target for these too, stocking up in hues and necklines. Which reminds me, it is time to restock, now that I am in the south!
Wait, I lie. I do check ASOS CURVE for options too. Even though I have not shopped them for tees in particular, I think that I will start with bodysuits!
The Statement/ Fashion Forward Tee
Statement Tees: 80’s tee by Rebdolls, Noir Print T-Shirt by ASOS CURVE, Pug Print T-Shirt at Simply Be, Janet #Celfie Slogan Oversized Tee at BooHoo, Abi Moustache Print Roll Sleeve Tee at Boohoo
Think those tees that have cool and fun sayings or bring an on trend silhouette. They have been on trend and double as a layering piece. RebDolls, Feminine Funk, ASOS Curve, Forever 21, and varying other fast fashion brands do the trick here for me. The trick for me is that I usually buy a size up from what I usually, as they will get washed and more likely shrink for me.
Fit and Shopping tips:
- Make sure that your tees fit with a little wiggle room. Not saying that you have to get it baggy, just enough to skim the curves.
- Do not pay attention to the size of the top but the fit. When you buy the right size, it will make a difference in the belly area.
- Pay attention to preshrink details. Is it already pre-shrunk? This will affect the stomach area fit and length.
- When you find one you love, buy multiples. You will thank me later.
- Do not be afraid to venture into the men’s area. You will be surprised and may even find a new fave!
I hope this helps you out a bit Randi!

Hey there,
Well, don’t forget Walmart. I know that they are not the top of the line in fashion but I love their Faded Glory brand short sleeved v neck pocket t shirts. And can’t beat the price and quality is great believe it or not! Also buy long sleeved v neck Hanes tshirts. Save a ton of money for a basic thing under a sweater or jacket.
Hilary
Hey there love! I completely agree, I am not sure if you saw that I mentioned them???
