When Life gives you Lemons- A reflection

Sharing is caring!

I hardly get too personal here, on my blog, however, with the new year approaching, I thought I would share with you where and how I got here, to this newfound perspective and place with The Curvy Fashionista and Marie Denee.

It is funny how God shows himself and his good deeds in the most inopportune of times. While it is said that God does close one door without opening another, I stand to share with you that this is very true! My name is Marie, and I share with you my story and the blessings that has brought me here through it all.

After graduating from college with my Bachelors of Business from CSU Fullerton, my job offered me a chance to uproot myself and move 600 miles away from family and friends to San Francisco. Realizing this amazing opportunity and with a little (read: big) push from my mother, I found myself in the midst of an amazing bustling city all by myself, with nothing but passion and excitement.

My journey with my company was a tumultuous one.  As a commissioned sales associate, my finances and living situations were continually challenged. Within the two years, I had been shown favor with two promotions within one year, with a promise to advance within the ranks of my job, but God had other plans.

I found that at every turn, I was attacked challenged, tried and beaten. What was once thought fabulous and stellar of my performance was now not enough (although I was bringing in 200% increases in my accountabilities). While at my employer, I put myself through my MBA in marketing, realizing a new passion that was laying dormant inside.

Fast forward to Friday, March 13th. I woke up this morning like any other day, watching MSNBC, sitting at my computer with my fashion blog and Twitter on the screen.  Call it divine intervention, but while on Twitter, a woman on TV started talking about turning your Hobby into your hustle. Jokingly, I referenced this to my twitter readers, thinking of how those words were very encouraging.

As I started to get ready for work, I was overwhelmed with angst and anxiety about going into work and could not stop crying.  Wanting to stay home and call out, I called into my job, with my manager encouraging that I just do a half day, so I acquiesced.

The moment I got to work, I was called up to HR, and released from my job for reasons extremely fuzzy (really, I still am perplexed). But!  I was not saddened, instead I felt relieved, to my surprise! weight or anchor of some sorts had been lifted.  I headed home, with tears from a sense of betrayal and confusion, and then it hit me. Those words that were shared with me that morning- turn your hobby into your hustle.

That night, my purpose was no clearer than it have ever been! You see, through my MBA research and even prior to that, I have had the desire to own my own Plus Size boutique, so to see what the feel was, what and how the response would be for my passion, I started The Curvy Fashionista in December 2008.  My initial purpose was to talk about plus size fashion, but my how it has evolved! It was not until I was removed from this situation (thankfully) that I was fortunate to step into my purpose!

Within the last nine months, my faith and beliefs gave me strength, motivation, and humilty, allowing me the chance to come steps closer to my dream and opening up new avenues I never knew I could walk in. My blog is something I started to make a difference, offer fashionable options, to become a resource within the Plus Size community and to earn respect amongst my fashion blogging peers.

In that path, I have been blessed with the chances to attend expos in Atlanta, fashion weeks in New York, and meet with designers, editors and become a resource for the discerning plus size fashionista!

God is sooo good! And while the enemy does his darndest to discourage and throw speed bumps in the way, I hold steadfast to God’s promise and push forward. Case in point, my previous employer denied my unemployment, a blow so devastating and scary, as one would worry, how am I going to take care of the roof over my head? Bills, student loans, car note, rent, and nerves all consumed me for a second, but then a calmness spoke to my heart and directed me to focus on my business plan. I was reminded that this 28 year old woman with a plan was not alone, but surrounded by love, favor and grace! With newfound friends, mentors, and the lovely support of family, I am pushing forward, writing, blogging, styling, and sharing!

So all of this to share with you my interesting nine months, the fuel behind my blog, The Curvy Fashionista, my boutique, Marie Denee, and the blessings that God is doing and continuing to do!

With that, I share with you to Trust Him, regardless how dire or challenging your situation may be, trust God. He does not put more on you than you can handle! And if you Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not to thy own understanding AND In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths you will be in good hands!

2009 has been a year of personal growth, struggles, blessings, faiths, and 2010 only leaves me with the best yet to come!

When Life gives you Lemons…

Reflect upon this year, the good, the bad, the ugly, know that everything happens for a reason, and that you are not given more than you can bear!

Thank you for your love, support, feedback, and comments!

Keep it Curvy.Confident.Chic.!

  1. I am not one to believe in fate. I realize this is the time of year for reflection and that many people will be writing their thoughts on the year past and hopes for the year to come.

Yet your story spoke to me.

I’m considerably older but had a similar work experience. On August 28, 2009 I was “laid off”. Like yours it was a blessing in disguise. A relief to be out of a job I had grown to dislike. Fortunately I was granted unemployment. However I’ve been floundering a bit these past 3 months. My skill set is for a career I no longer want (Social Services), and lacking in what does interest me (Makeup Artistry). I also have a few health issues to consider. I woke up this morning determined to be the best me. My focus at this point is not just on health but my overall wellness.

Thanks for sharing your story. May we all continue to be the best we can be.

  2. Thanks for sharing this Marie, your story is truly a blessing and spoke to me in many ways.

May God continue to bless all your endeavors. Cheers to a healthy and prosperous 2010!

  3. MarieDenee,

thank you for expressing yourself of overcoming challenges to believe in your product. I’m grateful for our friendship since our MBA classes together. Keep up the good work as i’ll do my best to support you & your business. May the new year bring you blessings. Happy New Year MarieDenee.

  4. You have an amazing testimony, and you’re doing the exact right thing with it: sharing with other to in turn inspire and be a witness for God. I too am working on making a transition from a job that I was ultimatly just doing for the money to one I am doing for happiness and fullfillment. May God’s clarity, grace, and favor continue to be shown to and showered on you.

  5. Sometimes it is hard to take the step of the unknown. You have to just do it. From what I see, it was a very positive step for you. Congratulations
