Founded in 1930 by Jack Green, Evans pioneered fashionable clothing for plus-size women at a time when few retailers served the market. Originally known as Evans Outsize, the company later shortened its name to Evans as attitudes toward plus-size fashion evolved. Over the decades, it became one of the UK’s most influential plus-size retailers and helped shape the modern curve fashion industry. Throughout its history, Evans introduced numerous industry-first initiatives. It became the market leader in UK plus-size womenswear during the 1980s, launched one of the earliest online shopping platforms among British fashion retailers, and collaborated with notable designers and celebrities including Beth Ditto, Dawn French, Clements Ribeiro, and model Crystal Renn. These partnerships helped establish Evans as a destination for trend-driven plus-size fashion rather than purely functional clothing. Following the collapse of Arcadia Group in 2020, Evans’ physical stores closed. The brand was acquired first by City Chic Collective and later by AK Retail Holdings, the parent company of Yours Clothing. Today, Evans operates primarily online and through selected Yours Clothing locations while continuing its focus on clothing designed specifically for plus-size bodies rather than graded-up straight-size garments. Today, Evans remains one of the most recognizable names in British plus-size fashion, offering modern wardrobe essentials, occasionwear, lingerie, footwear, and swimwear while serving customers in more than 150 countries.
