Chubby Cartwheels

Founded by Shawna Farmer, Chubby Cartwheels grew out of her Tumblr community and love of sewing, eventually becoming an online boutique specializing in handmade plus-size fashion. Every garment was designed and produced in Portland, Oregon, with an emphasis on originality and self-expression rather than hiding or minimizing larger bodies. The brand became known for vibrant leggings, crop tops, bodysuits, skater skirts, dresses, bandeaus, and novelty prints ranging from french fries and mermaids to galaxy patterns. Farmer also offered free custom sizing, ensuring customers outside the standard size range could still purchase her designs. This commitment made Chubby Cartwheels stand out in the indie plus-size fashion community. Chubby Cartwheels gained widespread recognition through collaborations with body-positive influencers and publications. In 2015, the brand partnered with writer and activist Jes Baker (The Militant Baker) on the Curves Reign collection, reinforcing its mission of creating bold fashion that celebrated fat bodies rather than disguising them. After more than a decade in business, Shawna Farmer announced the closure of Chubby Cartwheels in late 2020. Despite its closure, the brand remains influential within the indie plus-size fashion movement for its handmade approach, unapologetic aesthetic, and commitment to inclusive sizing.
