Plus Size Fashion with Musings of a Fatshionista

Your concept is so on point right now! With mainstream media clamoring to understand and decipher what the curvy girl wants you have neatly packaged it up it a fierce bow. What inspired your monthly recap?

At the end of 2009, we were all inundated (and ultimately annoyed) with end-of-the-year recap articles and lists. I decided to put together my own recap to showcase all the amazing fatshion that I’ve been seeing around the internet. I thought it would be a great inspiration to not only myself but everyone else that reads my blog. It turned out to be a huge hit and I decided to turn it into a monthly recap of amazingness!

Musings of a Fatshionista- how did you get into blogging?

Back in 2004, I was a freshman at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and I had a personal blog on LiveJournal. Since I was surrounded by all these students who expressed themselves through their clothing and how they dressed, I started to think about clothes in a different way. I started thinking about what my outfits said about me and if they were an accurate representation of who I was.

Needless to say, that helped to kick start my interest in fashion. Since I was already blogging, I searched the LiveJournal platform for fashion communities and came across Fatshionista. I instantly fell in love and soon learned about all these new plus size designers and retailers that I’d knew nothing about. I decided to start a new blog to keep track of all of my random musings about fashion and thus, Musings of a Fatshionista was born.

You have a very sharp and discerning eye for fashion. What’s your muse?

Musing of a Fatshionista

I draw inspiration from everything and everyone around me. Everything from art, magazines, people I see out and about, fashion bloggers, and advertisements all contribute to the vision I have of how I want to present myself to the world.

One of my current inspirations is Zana, the blogger of Garbage Dress. I actually first came across her from one of the fashion communities on LiveJournal. While she is not plus size, the ideas behind her outfits and the way that she executes them is totally inspirational. That same logic applies to everyone, regardless of size.

If money weren’t an issue, what would your dream closet consist of?

My dream closet would consist of only three main colors – blacks, whites, and greys. I’d build my entire wardrobe around Gareth Pugh and Rad Hourani because I love layering and dramatic silhouettes (also because Rad has a leather and black sequin jacket that he needs to make in a size 22).

I’d supplement it with clothes from Haider Ackermann, Rick Owens, Rodarte and Alexander McQueen. This basically means that I’d be the chicest person on the planet, so we need to make this is a reality!

What else are you involved in fatshionably speaking?

I have a few things happening this summer that I’m really excited about. I don’t want to jinx it so I won’t say much but 2010 will definitely be a good year!

Who are some of your favorite designers both straight and plus right now?

My favorite designer is Gareth Pugh. Every single collection he shows is better than the last. He has a distinct point of view and he doesn’t water it down to appeal to the mainstream fashion industry and I love that about him.

My other favorite designers include Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens and Alber Elbaz.

What fashion item are you currently eyeing and dying to be in your closet RIGHT NOW!

There’s two. One is these insane Rick Owens wedges that need to be on my feet right this instant. I don’t have the $900 for them but if anyone wants to put together an ‘Xtina-is-the-greatest-and-deserves-those-wedges’ fund in time for my 25th birthday, I’d love you forever.

The other are these two sequin jackets coming out in Evans’ new Spring collection. I am literally counting down the days until they are for sale. I will spend my last bit of money acquiring them. It is that serious.

I love that you challenge society’s perception of what Fatshion should look like, smell, and taste like. What words can you leave with the aspiring curvy fashionistas?

I always tell people to never be afraid to take risks. As plus size women, we are always told to dress to flatter/slim or to blend in. I do exactly the opposite. I break every plus size fashion rule there is and I look amazing while doing so.

I like to push the boundaries of what is acceptable in plus size fashion. No one else has the power to dictate or influence how I dress myself because I dress to please me, not others. I hope that others do the same.

Tell everyone where they can catch you!

I’m always on Twitter, tweeting my life away. I have have a Facebook fan page where people can interact with other fatshionable people as well as myself. Oh, and my blog, Musings of a Fatshionista.

What do you think of Christina and her blog?!
