How long have you been blogging?
I began blogging at Fatgirlflow.com in April of 2015 after years of casually blogging on Tumblr for several years
What or who inspired you to become a fashion blogger? What led you to it?
I joined Tumblr back in 2012 in an attempt to find more representation of fat people and body positivity. I was really struggling with loving myself after years of disordered eating and hating my body, and the fat positive community on Tumblr inspired me to start writing about my own journey to self love through fashion.
Do you blog full-time, for fun, as a hobby? Share your evolution!
I blog full time, and have for about a year and a half now. I have been incredibly lucky to have such an amazing and loyal community who supports me and helps me grow my brand.
What is your favorite asset? Your legs, arms, waist? How do you play that up?
My favorite asset will always be my energy – and anything that is comfortable and makes me feel like a bad ass will always get my energy up. I used to focus very heavily on whether or not clothing would highlight a certain part of my body, but lately I’m more focused on whether or not I feel fierce in what I’m wearing. And if I do – look out world! I’m unstoppable!
What are the challenges, if any, you face regarding being plus size?
Aside from the challenges that we face every day like shopping and not being able to travel as easily as smaller individuals, I think the biggest challenge I have had to face is getting proper medical care. I’ve weight cycled (gained and lost large amounts of weight) my entire life, and always had doctors cheering me on when I was using unhealthy methods of weight loss. I struggle now to trust medical professionals, but this year I’m making a commitment to advocating for myself and finding fat positive doctors.
What’s your favorite thing about being plus size?
I have never been small. I am tall, and I am strong and sturdy. I love walking into a room and taking up space. I used to be afraid of it, and always tried to make myself smaller. Now, I stand with pride, take up space, and command the attention I think I’ve always deserved!
What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger?
It’s currently midnight, and I’m up working on my website. I don’t think I’ve left my house today, as I’ve been glued to work since 8am. Even though my tushy is sore, and my eyes are tired, there is absolutely nowhere else I would rather be. I love this community. I love the friends I have made. I love the support system of other plus size people. My work makes that possible, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Who/what are your favorite designers/brands?
I am currently in love with Origami Customs, an indie brand that creates babely bodysuits, swimwear, and lingerie for all body sizes.
Describe your personal style.
I want to think that I’m a 1990’s Mariah Carey meets Drew Barrymore, but I think I end up just looking like a slightly grungy/hippie girl-next-door
Which bloggers inspire you? Plus or straight size! Any bloggers currently on your radar?
I absolutely love so many bloggers. Marcy Cruz from Fearlessly Just Me, Alysse Delassandro of Ready To Stare, Sonya Renee Taylor from The Body Is Not An Apology, Margot Meanie, Ragini of a Curious Fancy, are just a few of the people who I find wildly inspiring both in their styles and in what they are bringing to the conversation about body positivity.
What do you think about where plus size fashion is today versus a few years back?
I have been online shopping and creating a vast Rolodex of “where to shop” information in my brain ever since I started wearing plus sizes, and while we may not always feel like much progress has been made I’m telling you – I’m running out of brain space! The amount of options we have today far surpasses anything I could have imagined when I was 25 years old and stuck doing all my shopping in Lane Bryant. We have a long way to go. We have got to get past the 3x cap and start serving people beyond size 24. But wow, we’ve come a long way.
What do you think or hear from readers, is one of the biggest myths about plus size fashion?
That we only want “flattering” clothes. It’s so often not about how we want our body to LOOK in something, it’s about how we want to FEEL in it. We want to feel like we’re able to take part in trends, and have the same access to clothing as everyone else. I want to wear the goofy mom shorts, no matter how silly they look!
Are you working on anything or have anything to share?
I am currently working on a project that will help other future bloggers learn how to get started and make money blogging. We work in an industry that is completely unregulated and that means a lot of us are shooting in the dark and have no real guidance or direction when we start. I want people to have the same chance at doing this wild fashion blogging thing as I have, so I created www.SoYouWannaBlog.com and will start putting content out by the beginning of April.
Lastly, what does Curvy.Confident.Chic mean to you?
It’s all about living your best life, and loving what you’re putting out into the universe.
