If you’re catching flights over feelings this year, you may want to keep reading. We’re getting into the best airlines for plus size travelers.

Flying while full figured can be discouraging, to say the least. With corporations’ extra-seat policies hiking up the booking prices, many “overweight” individuals have either put to rest their longtime dream of boarding a plane or limited their use of in-air transportation out of fear of another intolerable, hours-long trip.

It’s not just the extra cost that’s the problem — it’s also the lack of comfort. From constantly bumping elbows with fellow passengers to squeezing through narrow spaces, plus-size travelers have often found air travel to be more of a hassle than a convenience. So much so that many would rather endure long drives or take the bus or train to avoid the hassle.

Unfortunately, there have been many scenarios where the inconsideration of bigger bodies has ruined someone’s traveling experience. But what do you do when going coast-to-coast? Thankfully, getting to your destination doesn’t always have to be an annoying experience because we’ve done the research for you.
Despite the horror stories, there are some airlines that have shown generosity towards non-average-size passengers.

These carriers have gone beyond the conventional rules to ensure that every customer, regardless of size, has a pleasant and comfortable journey. Check out five airlines that are doing the work below.

Here Are Some of the Best Airlines for Plus Size Travelers

JetBlue

JetBlue began operations in 2000 and has long been praised for its five-star transport style. These days, however, they’ve received much acclaim for their plus-size-friendly seating. Aside from the free-for-all wi-fi, TV perks, and unlimited snacks, their stretching area is why they’re applauded for their amenities.

Although JetBlue’s economy seats already provide ample room (standard pitch of 30 in. and up/upwards 18.25 in.), with the Even More Space seats, fliers gain access to a wider section (up to 38″ of legroom), early boarding, and first-pick on overhead bins. Depending on the aircraft and row, all seats differ in the amount of pitch in this sector.

Boarders have even raved about the amazing recline and armrest space. Additionally, you’re can request a seatbelt extender (beforehand) if needed. According to the website, the fee for Even More Space varies by route.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines is a major airline and the third largest in North America. In addition to boasting its seniority title, Southwest Airlines has stripped away the anxiety of physical restraints for plus size riders by offering complimentary spots to those “who encroach upon any part of the neighboring seat(s).”

Southwest’s ‘Customer-of-Size’ policy encourages customers needing more room to purchase an additional one ahead of travel (to confirm availability). However, if you don’t, upon the inflight agent’s assessment of the seating arrangement, you’ll get one for free. Either way, it’s a win because even if you’ve already paid for the extra seat, they’re willing to refund once the flight is over.

This is certainly one of the best airlines for plus size girlies and guys.

Delta Air Lines

Surprisingly, Delta has no strict rules/regulations to follow for overweight passengers. If you’re unable to lower the armrest or need a seatbelt extender, they won’t make you purchase an extra seat. However, if you “impede” another passenger, they may relocate your seat.

Delta is often recognized as a size inclusive-forward airline, as its seats flaunt a 17-18.5 width with a 30-33 pitch. Similar to JetBlue’s Even More Space, Delta also offers things like Delta Comfort+ that allow you to upgrade to added legroom. Some have argued that Delta Comfort+ and Economy seats are about the same (34-26 in. pitch) but are said to (possibly) allow more movement.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines, another major American airline, is deemed the fifth-largest in North America.

Their ‘Customers-of-Size’ policy sort of mirrors Southwest’s refund promise, but there’s only one difference. Fliers who can’t “comfortably fit” in the seat with the armrest down will be forced to buy a second seat. However, refunds can be issued, but only if Alaska had an open seat at the time of departure.

As for seatbelt extenders, they’re available in 25-in. All of their aircraft have a seat width of approximately 17 inches, and the seatbelt is around 46 inches. There have been good reviews about the seating space, but we’d like to conclude that it’s dependent upon the passenger’s specific needs.

Spirit Airlines

This one may be considered underrated on the list of best airlines for plus size travelers.

Spirit Airlines saw its first flight in 1992 and quickly became the controversial transport it is today through its “ultra-low-cost” airfare.

Aside from its budget travel, Spirit accommodates its ‘Guests of Size’ through its BIG FRONT SEATS. Their encroach rule is just about the same as others, as they require the purchase of another seat if you break their “encroaching” rule on an adjacent seat.

The BIG FRONT SEATS are larger seats with up to 11″ of further legroom.

Did this help you find the best airlines for plus size travelers? If so, let us know which one you’re considering in the comments below!
