Jennifer Hudson recently shot with Daily Mail and offered a bit of insight into her world. She gives her opinion on being discrimated against as a plus size women, her successes and disappointments, surviving after her family deaths, the joys of being a mommy.

Jennifer Hudson in the Daily Mail

On if the industry discriminates against plus-sized women:
โ€˜No, because I was doing OK before,โ€™ Jennifer says. โ€˜But the truth is, so many more opportunities open up when youโ€™re on the other side, as I am now. Iโ€™d no idea what I was missing out on. Itโ€™s like a whole other world. Suddenly every designer wants to dress you. Itโ€™s like, โ€œYou look amazing! Please, choose a dress. Have a bag. And what about shoes?โ€

(sidebar:ย Perhapsย theย question asked by theย reporter shouldย have been โ€œdo you see a differenceโ€ because clearly she does. I only partly agree with the discrimination factor.ย Rarely do you see a woman of size on a the cover of Vogue, Glamour, or Elle. And even if theyโ€™re featured in the UK version of the publication they are photographed in mainly head shots. One of the biggest challenges in theย curvy community isย the lack of plus size designers in mainstream fashion. So droppin 80lb+ might be an advantage for any celebrity. I couldย quote Tom Ford and sayย โ€˜Amercians are too fatโ€™ย anyways, right.ย Butย can fat be healthy? โ€“ I feel a blog post coming on!)

On being successful:
โ€˜To be able to sing at this level is a blessing in itself, and I got publicity for what I was doing before I dieted. But never to this extent. Now, whenever I open a magazine, I seem to see myself there. And I get to dress up every day and have someone take photos of it all. For someone who loves fashion, itโ€™s like living the dream. Of course there are those mornings when I think, โ€œPlease donโ€™t look at me right now!โ€ But you just have to pull yourself together, get out there and do your job. I mean, how lucky am I to be in this position?โ€™

On being a mommy:
โ€˜When itโ€™s mommy time at home, the supermodel me โ€“ black Barbie, as I call her โ€“ is definitely not in the house. I donโ€™t want to be all glammed-up in big hair and full make-up. I need to relax, to breathe and to concentrate on my son.โ€™

On the tragic shooting death of her mother, brother and nephew:
โ€˜You have no choice but to keep going,โ€™ she says quietly. โ€˜What else are you going to do? Itโ€™s called life and youโ€™ve got to be prepared to deal with whatever it brings your way.โ€™

On disappointments:
โ€˜โ€œDonโ€™t block your blessings. Donโ€™t let doubt stop you from getting where you want to be.โ€ Those were the lessons that I took from American Idol,โ€™ says Jennifer. โ€˜OK, from now on I refuse to let anyone interrupt the vision I have for myself.โ€ Sometimes I think we hurt ourselves by being too aware of the challenges. It can be better not to know. With Dreamgirls, I had absolutely no idea what I was letting myself in for until I was out there on the set.โ€™

ย On her son:
โ€˜Heโ€™s very much his own person, a little performer who loves to sing and dance,โ€™ she says. โ€˜Heโ€™s so charming, too. Yes, Iโ€™m biased, but Iโ€™ve never seen a child with such presence. He says โ€œhiโ€ or โ€œbye byeโ€ to everyone when he comes in or out of a room, and goes round blowing kisses to everyone. My phone is completely backed up from videoing everything he does, because he surprises me constantly. โ€˜When I found out I was pregnant and went for the scan, he was so very little. To have that memory fresh in my mind and yet to now have this boy with me, dancing and laughingโ€ฆโ€™

Check out the pics:

ย ย

Fat or thin JHud looks amaze-in (despite that her head sometimes appears a little too large for her neck). I am glad to see any woman making strides in the industry.

Q: Do you think plus size celebrities are discrimnated against? I didnโ€™t see JHud on a covers before her 80lb+ shed. Chime in below.ย

I cannot agree with what Jennifer has to say because I do feel that the industry is discriminating against plus-sized women as much as I like her as a singer I feel that the brighter flashing blubs are blinding her view as how it was for her before she lost the weight. When she said โ€œNo, because I was doing OK before,โ€™ Jennifer says. โ€˜But the truth is, so many more opportunities open up when youโ€™re on the other side, as I am now.โ€ In my mind Iโ€™m thinking okay what happened if she didnโ€™t lose that weight? Would she still be getting all the attention she has now? Probably not. If she stayed the same all she would still be known for is Dream Girls. This also goes with other Plus size women For example Raven-Symone yes she was a popular Disney Star and then she would pop up once in a blue ,but now since she has lost all that weight she is all over and everyone is saying how beautiful she is, but if she is beautiful now what was she before? Same thing goes for Toccaraโ€ฆ Couldnโ€™t get that girl off my computer screen or television at one time.ย  I bet right now almost everyone forgot about Gabby Sidibe even though everyone tried to see the good people kept her in such a negative light some people probably wouldnโ€™t know what could she was trying to bring to the industry, but if she lost a big amount of weight they would make her the new โ€œitโ€ girl. Going back to the topic I donโ€™t agree

Even when plus sized women do show up on the covers of Vogue or other fashion magazines, itโ€™s always the same thing:ย  Theyโ€™re not REALLY plus sized, theyโ€™re just bigger than the bone-thin waifs that are usually on those covers.ย  AND, these โ€œplus sizedโ€ girls only show up on issues that are specifically talking about the plus size issue.
I will rejoice when the day comes that a TRULYย plus sized beauty shows up on the cover of Vogue, not because they want to make an issue about plus sized women, but because sheโ€™s genuinely beautiful.

There absolutely is discriminaition against plus sized women in the entertainment industry.ย ย It doesnโ€™t mean thatย genuinely talented plus-sized women arenโ€™t being given opportunities, butย in order for those opportunities to be given a plus-sized woman must be SERIOUSLY talented.ย  Unlike the opportunities afforded toย thin and conventionallyย โ€˜hot lookingโ€™ girls with little to no real talent who are still being given recording contracts and movie roles.

    Just sayinโ€™.ย

How could anyone say that there wasnโ€™t plus sized discrimination in movies and on TV?ย  Pick any movie or TV show (made for women in particular) and you will find that the plucky heroin is a skinny white girl with long hair.ย  There are very few exceptions.ย  Her best friend might be Asian, black or white, have short hair, and may even be above a size 2, but probably not above a size 4.ย  The heroin may be above 140 pounds (or have a skin color other than white for that matter) only if that is part of the story (wacky โ€œfatโ€ girl finds true love or black family goes to dinner with white family and chaos ensues!).ย  I am painfully aware of this problem.ย  I am not saying that curvy is better than slim, but I do strongly believe that different ideas of beauty need to be represented in the media.ย  It makes me sad, and it also makes me angry.ย  If they ever make a movie that has a bigger girl in it, or even a leading lady who is (gasp!) a size 8 without even mentioning her weight, I will jump for joy.ย  But Iโ€™m not holding my breath.ย

Not a lot of them, Chandra Wilson, Amber Riley are the only leading ladies I know. I also love character actress Yvette Brown, currently starring on Community.

You want to know whats sad Marie, Ive been turned down 3 or 4 photographers that said they would not shoot my line if I had plus sized models show up at shoots. Its very bizarre, attitude.ย
Theres a lot of bias in the fashion industry. Im starting to realized that certain shapes and hues are not welcome. ย On the other hand I see plus sized is be coming more popular among younger people. So hopefully the perception will change.
