Spring Cleaning Your Closet: The Ultimate Guide to Fashion Detoxing!

Weโ€™ve got some tips for you to get your closet so organized that youโ€™ll have no excuses for why you canโ€™t buy that new spring wardrobe!

Here are 7 Handy Spring Cleaning Tips for Cleaning Your Closet!

1. Enlist backup and Invite a Friend Over For Help and Treats:

Spring cleaning your closet is always more fun with a friend by your side. Invite your girlfriends over for a closet cleanout party and make room for new clothes together. Fuel your decluttering session with treats like cupcakes or pizza โ€“ because letโ€™s face it, friends will do anything for food! This may also be the perfect opportunity to make it a clothing swap session or a way to offload a few items that need to go!

2. Try It On:

When was the last time you tried on every item in your closet? Take the time to assess the fit and condition of each piece. If it no longer fits or needs repairs you havenโ€™t gotten around to, itโ€™s time to bid it farewell. Be honest with yourself โ€“ if it doesnโ€™t make you feel fabulous, itโ€™s time to let it go.

3. Ask & Be Honest With Yourself, Does it Make You Happy:

As you sift through your wardrobe and are spring cleaning your closet, ask yourself if each item truly brings you joy. Keep pieces that make you feel confident and discard those that evoke negative emotions or simply donโ€™t resonate with your style anymore. Consider paring down duplicates โ€“ do you really need ten pairs of black jeans?

  • I go through a process of asking myself all types of questions, when cleaning out the closet, just like when I am about to make a purchase. Does it really make you feel like a million bucks and/or does it satisfy a basic need? Keep it! Are you on the fence and cannot bring yourself to love it? Let her go. Do you find yourself doing a little dance in it because you love it? She is a keeper! Conversely, if you have items that make you feel some kind of (negative) way, let it go.

4. Follow The โ€˜One (or two) Year Ruleโ€™:

If you havenโ€™t worn an item in over a year, itโ€™s time to say goodbye. Whether it still has the tag on or is collecting dust in the back of your closet, be ruthless in your curation process. Consider selling or donating these items to make room for pieces youโ€™ll actually wear.

  • Whatโ€™s the one-year rule? It means getting rid of anything thatโ€™s been in your closet for over a year that you havenโ€™t worn. This is a great time to either sell that item to make some extra change or donate it to a thrift store and make someoneโ€™s day. Either way, if itโ€™s been in the closet for 1 year itโ€™s time for it to go!

5. Make a Toss it, Donate, & Sell It Pile:

Parting with beloved clothes can be tough, but itโ€™s necessary to make space for new additions. Sort your items into piles โ€“ keep, toss, donate, and sell. Toss worn-out or damaged pieces, donate gently used items to those in need, and sell high-end pieces to recoup some cash for your spring shopping spree.

  1. Toss It: So, those jeans that are tattered beyond repair or revival? Toss them. That dress that has lost shape, lose elasticity, whose hem is shot? Let her go, love.
  2. Donate It: Donating your gently used clothes is always a great way to give back to the community. Donating your gently used clothes could really help them out. Only donate clothes in good shape of course, those with rips and stains should be tossed out.
  3. Sell It: There are great places to sell your high-end clothes for a reduced price. You can also organize a small yard sale to make money off your old winter wardrobe right away! Selling your clothes via a Plus Size Consignment store is another way to have make money as the items sell! The more you sell, the more cash youโ€™ll have to buy your spring wear and who can resist that?

6. Hangers are Everything:

After you are done with Spring cleaning your closet, it is time to invest in quality hangers to properly care for your clothes and maximize space in your closet. Opt for wooden or felted hangers, which provide better support and organization, especially for delicate items with fancy sleeves or straps. Consider slim hangers to optimize space and keep your closet visually appealing.

7. Organize Your Closet:

Once youโ€™ve decluttered and curated your wardrobe, itโ€™s time to organize it for easy access and visual appeal. Use canvas compartments for shoes, add hampers to separate clean and dirty clothes, and consider implementing a system that works best for your space. An organized closet will make getting dressed a breeze and elevate your overall fashion experience.

Spring cleaning your closet may seem like a daunting task, but with these tips, youโ€™ll be well-equipped to tackle the challenge. You may shed a few tears as you do so but hey, youโ€™re making room for brand new things! Oh! Shopping! That dried your tears up quickly didnโ€™t it?

really good advice โ€” I like the one does it make your spirit soar!! Another idea when you begin is to take everything out of the closet and put it on the bed etc and then that way you either have to do it or else you have to sleep on top of your clothes that night ๐Ÿ™‚ Also good tunes are an absolute must, not sure I would get much done if my friends were present as we would talk too much Cheers

I do it with the seasons. Mainly because summers here are so very warm and winters cool so really do have two wardrobes. And I apply that one year thing โ€” if I know I havenโ€™t worn it for that long I really need to say adieu. Also my girlfriend uses green garbage bags and she stores them in her garage for a further couple of weeks or more just in case she has a re-think and the item can be rescued. That way you wonโ€™t have any remorse. That being said I still have a couple of absolute favourite comfy sweaters that I know are well over twenty years old and No I am not parting with them however, I donโ€™t wear them out and about ha ha Luv

I also love cleaning out my closets several times a year. I simply buy too many things that I just donโ€™t end up loving. You made a great point when you said to ask yourself if it brings you joy. Donโ€™t hang on to clothes that donโ€™t make you feel good!
