NYFW Diaries: Torrid’s Spring 2018 Collection Recap

So this week has been a big win in the book for the plus size community. From the two plus size shopping events over the weekend to the NYFW shows we have been having a great week! So I was more than excited to find out that I was going to get to go to my very first NYFW show!! When your very first NYFW runway show happens to be for Torrid’s Spring 2018 collection, you walk into the affair with plenty of excitement. Primarily because you love the brand, but also because you don’t quite know what to expect from the show.

But with eager anticipation (not to mention my brightest red lip), I hopped the C Train in Brooklyn, Soho bound to check out the show. It took every bit of my self respect not to tell everyone I encountered where I was going. From the guy in the bodega, to my fellow strap-handlers on the train. However, I kept it calm, cool and collected (or rather my very best impression of it!). Little did I know that the pre-show wait made my cool demeanor crumble down like the wall of Jericho!! Curvy Companions… Everything almost took me out!

Waiting outside of Gallery III to take our seats was like watching the flyest plus size Instagram feed come to life. Model Nazira Sacasa was on one side of the room, chatting with Sarah Chiwaya. I spotted Gabi Fresh, Essie Golden and Troy Solomon huddling up in another corner, no doubt talking fashion, life and fabulousness.

When I had my fill of breathing the same air as The Who’s Who of the plus size fashion world and the doors finally opened, I was eager to take my seat and check out the show. I knew that Torrid’s show was going to give me life, and they did not disappoint in the least bit.

Torrid’s Spring 2018 Collection is a little bit romantic, and a little bit rock and roll. We saw lace, hand-painted detailing, corsets, camisoles and kimonos. Moto jackets and boots galore and whimsical maxi dresses when you’re sorely in need of feeling like a total Goddess!! It was a collection full of items you’re REALLY going to be psyched about!

Adding to the excitement was the opportunity to see the top ten finalists from this year’s Torrid Third Annual Model Search, who walked the runway during the show. As I watched these ten women from all over the United States and Canada, I felt tremendously proud of them. Like me, this was perhaps their very first time attending a runway show at NYFW and they are actually walking the show. From Dallas to San Francisco, Las Vegas to Toronto, these women killed it on the catwalk and I am so honored to be one of the first to see them before they blow up!

It was also especially fitting to see both newbie and seasoned models of various looks model this newest collection, because Torrid’s Spring 2018 Collection is one full of harmonious blending of trends and influences.

The collection is equal parts feminine mystique, urban trendy, boho chic and punk rock party girl. What could’ve been a jarring collection of items that are unrelated to one another, instead the pieces play together effortlessly and scream fashion.

Walking away from my very first runway show for NYFW, I found myself very grateful that it was Torrid. The Torrid Spring 2018 Collection is a celebration of the multifaceted nature of curvy women everywhere. The pieces were well-made, lovingly crafted and each model wore their look with oodles of confidence as they strutted their stuff on the runway.

From the hand-painted pieces to the maxi dresses, I saw so many pieces I could very easily see myself rocking. And I have a very strong feeling that you will dig the collection, too!! Trust me when I say this… start saving up now! It’s going to be a very fashionable spring for us!!! Aww yeah!! And for added proof check out the gallery below for all the looks from today’s show!
