TCF PLUS SIZE FASHION INDEX

Methodology

At The Curvy Fashionista, we believe that plus size fashion deserves to be documented with intention, not just listed.

The Plus Size Fashion Index is a curated, editorially reviewed directory designed to highlight brands, boutiques, and designers, and each pillar has its own evaluation criteria. This page outlines how we assess, select, and maintain entries across all three.

Because transparency matters, especially in an industry that hasn’t always shown up for our community.

Our Approach

The Plus Size Fashion Index is built on a simple idea: not all size inclusion is created equal.
Rather than automatically listing every brand that offers extended sizing, we take an editorial approach, focusing on brands, boutiques, and designers that meaningfully serve plus size shoppers.

This includes businesses that:
• design specifically for plus size bodies
• offer extended sizing beyond standard ranges
• demonstrate a clear commitment to size inclusion
• are relevant to the evolving plus size fashion landscape

Our goal is not just to track brands, but to highlight the ones contributing to the growth and visibility of plus size fashion.

How We Evaluate Brands

When reviewing brands for inclusion we consider: size range and consistency of sizing, product categories, brand positioning and target audience, availability and accessibility, visual representation and commitment to inclusive imagery, and overall relevance to the plus size fashion community.

How We Evaluate Boutiques

For boutique entries we consider: size range carried, retail model (online, physical, or both), fit specialization, price point accessibility, shipping reach, in-store experience where applicable, and how intentionally the boutique serves plus size customers as a primary, not secondary, audience.

How We Evaluate Designers

For designer profiles we consider: design focus and specialty, contribution to plus size fashion visibility and innovation, historical significance to the plus size fashion industry, and editorial relevance to the community TCF serves.

What We Evaluate

When reviewing businesses for inclusion, we consider several factors.

These may include:
• Size range and consistency of sizing
• Product categories (e.g., ready-to-wear, occasionwear, activewear)
• Brand positioning and target audience
• Availability and accessibility (online, retail, direct-to-consumer)
• Visual representation and commitment to inclusive imagery
• Overall relevance to the plus size fashion community

Not every brand will meet every criteria but taken together, these factors help us determine whether a brand belongs in the index.

What “Plus Size” Means in the Index

We recognize that “plus size” is not a one-size-fits-all definition.

For the purposes of the index, we generally consider brands that offer sizing starting at or above a US size 14, or brands that meaningfully extend beyond straight-size ranges.

However, inclusion is not based on a single number alone.

We also consider:
• how consistently extended sizes are offered
• whether plus sizes are integrated or treated as an afterthought
• how the brand presents and markets to plus size consumers

Because offering “extended sizing” and actually designing for plus size bodies are not always the same thing.

How Brands Are Selected

Brands included in the Plus Size Fashion Index are identified through a combination of:

• editorial research
• industry awareness

• community recommendations
• direct brand submissions

How the Index Is Updated

The Plus Size Fashion Index is designed to be a living resource.

We regularly:
• add new brands, boutiques, and designers
• update existing listings
• refine categories and classifications
• track changes in sizing and product offerings

As the plus size fashion market evolves, the index evolves with it.

OUR COMMITMENT

Editorial Independence

The Curvy Fashionista maintains full editorial control over the Plus Size Fashion Index.

While brands may submit themselves for consideration, inclusion in the index is based on editorial review, not payment or sponsorship.

From time to time, we may feature brands within the index through editorial content or partnerships. These placements will always be clearly disclosed.

Our priority is maintaining the integrity of the index and serving the plus size community with transparency.
