1:28
and let's welcome miss Shonda nice hello Sean hi how are you doing what I'm doing
1:35
wonderful well thank you for joining us today thank you for having me
1:41
like it's so exciting to have you I've been I think we've been chatting on
1:47
Facebook for some years now right yeah yes and we didn't even know that we live
1:52
down the street from each other right wait both you and I be stuck at home huh
1:58
yes always that's the house but I'm a workaholic for a reason so okay like
2:06
show us why so tell us a little bit
2:11
about yourself tell us a little bit about your brand like how long have you been designing like tell us a little bit
2:17
about you okay um well just a little bit I'm a graduate of Tennessee State
2:23
University born in Atlanta raised in Decatur I lived all over the southeast
2:28
region and during that period of traveling with my job I realized that I
2:34
really to be a fashion designer so in 2013 I was actually living in Albany Georgia I
2:41
decided to create my own plus-size line I'm a self-taught centrist designer
2:47
everything um everything I pretty much just can't either learned on my own or
2:53
watching YouTube one of the things that I noticed back then was there wasn't a
2:58
lot of color and there weren't a lot of statement and detailed pieces and so
3:04
that's pretty much what I wanted to do I'm very artistic I love designing
3:09
designing from clothing to pretty much anything I just love design but I wanted
3:16
to make sure that my collection that you have a little bit of detail in some of
3:21
my work something that you could not find anywhere else so that was pretty much the core of why I became a designer
3:28
and what I wanted people to see when they saw my clothing all right so bold is I keep referencing
3:35
bold because you talked about like they didn't see a lot of color like the second that you go onto your st. you see
3:43
blues and purples and reds and animal prints and watercolor painting colors
3:49
and patterns and and that's exciting because you're right you know oftentimes like you know for the longest time it
3:58
was like black navy brown and maybe white bread maybe right and so right go
4:05
ahead even now you go into a store you know they have these seasonal colors and
4:10
then those are the colors that you shop and you may get a pair of pants and and black or top and blue but I wanted it I
4:19
wanted each collection to represent those colors but the the end point is that you will be able
4:26
to walk into a paint brush underneath store and pick out a rib legs or our
4:31
purple blades or our green blazer and a rail shades and colors because I just
4:37
don't believe that I should be confined to just these seasonal colors if I want
4:43
to wear red that was the basics behind
4:49
paint brush underneath as you can paint yourself they need to color that you
4:55
want to and so for those who are just tuning in we're here with Sean Denise
5:01
from from the her collection paint by Sean Denise which is perfectly like
5:06
apropos like paint color so if you are looking for
5:12
playful bold designs contemporary fashions this is where you want to check
5:18
out this is where you want to go if you I had someone D that said that they wouldn't be able to stay on longer
5:24
wanted to know the designer no worries this will be in a replay and we will also have an article attached to this
5:32
later on today that you can kind of peek through some of our favorite finds from the site and that you'll be able to go
5:38
directly to his site to learn more so we've got a couple of different ways for you to stay connected even after our
5:43
Facebook live really quick wanna save shout out to some people who said hello we've got a Tawana Natalie Rachel she's
5:53
from South Texas we've got South Texas and has we've got Alexis Alexis coffee girl says she's
6:00
checking in from Decatur where he's greater Georgia yeah he's got Ruth
6:06
tuning in from New York we've got Jill Alexander hey Betty coming in from from LA from the west
6:13
coast so as you guys are just tuning in we are here with paint by Sean Denise a
6:20
plus-sized designer who's local here to Georgia and we're getting to know we're
6:26
sharing with you a little bit about her line about her collection and and how and why it's important to support our
6:32
small business owners so for you how have you been impacted how has this
6:39
impacted we talked a little bit about this before we went live but how have you been impacted so far I definitely
6:49
had three fashion shows planned I'm in March into an April that you know didn't
6:55
happen so that delayed the collection that I'm getting ready early next Friday
7:01
because it was like how do you release it you know I sympathize with everything
7:08
that's gone I think today 36 million people lost their jobs so my initial was
7:14
bread sure was I don't think people buy clothes too much right now there's so much going on but after I've watched
7:22
everything play out I just kind of motivated my sister said hey you have to
7:27
keep going because yes some people have lost their job but there are people like
7:32
myself because I still work my 95 but there are people like myself who are still employed and who still want find
7:41
fashion and statement pieces so it's definitely been a learning experience for me but I've been trying to push
7:49
forward and just keep going to go ahead and release the collection out and just see what happens as you should as you
7:56
should and I think what's important is like when we talk about like you know folks like healing our small business
8:02
our art designers or any designers they're the ones who foster and create innovation and show these buyers and
8:11
major retailers the things that we want to see like and it kind of helps set the tone for you know bucking the system so
8:19
to speak right challenging what they think that we want to wear what has been probably one of your most surprising
8:26
bestsellers of your collection that you can never have enough of my bestseller
8:35
last year whereas the Green met the open foot massacre
8:41
that influence from Michael O War and then soap I laugh when you accent because before I sent it to her I said
8:50
Michael I don't think this looks good nobody's gonna like this and she said are you crazy
8:55
just gorgeous like I don't really know and if he showed that within about four
9:01
hours Oh so um one thing that I also have learned you didn't journey stop
9:07
second-guessing myself yes because I'm such I'm so hard on myself like I don't
9:13
know how this will look and end up being a best-seller so that's why I say
9:18
whatever I do I'm just gonna go ahead and release and let the chip oh but definitely that key I mean I I
9:26
rethought and then I was still sold out within the day of restocking I mean
9:31
everyone loved loved loved the open slit maxi skirt I love them too they go with
9:38
me I'm wearing a maxi skirt right now anybody that can't be it but they go with everything so relaxing I was loved
9:46
and so and we're always here for a good twirl maxi skirt always always so what
9:56
is coming out new for you and you know you talked about your drop in your collection next week Friday hopefully
10:03
maybe we can get some in um images before you drop so that we can our cheese I'm just saying I'm just saying
10:10
what is what is this new collection all about darling so the first part was
10:16
celebrit print and I'm doing a little bit more leopard print but I'm playing with the yellow and black and I love the
10:24
yellow and black accent colors along with the leopard print so the continuation of the first part of paw
10:30
patrol the spring collection and this is the second part another five books I
10:35
love all of them and what I love the most about this collection is you can
10:41
mix and match all of the oh that's really I'm actually that on purpose but when it came out and
10:48
I started thousand up there man everything matches so it's bad for me and I love that shoes that everything
10:55
matches with each other all the collectors for the most part that's that's awesome and like one of the
11:02
things I I think for me I'm a big like I want to be able to wear one item like five different ways five different
11:09
occasions like I need my pieces to give me options to give me variety and you
11:17
know I want you know because for me I dress for my mood but I don't dress for
11:22
like I just - how I'm feeling so if I'm feeling dramatic then I want to feel dramatic if I am feeling playful and
11:31
sexy I want something that will give me that so it's definitely exciting to see
11:39
because some of the pictures that you have shown like there's so much confidence that oozes in zynga with me
11:46
like they are given us in life and all of these images do like they are giving
11:51
us so much life and especially in these like animal prints I'm excited I'm
11:58
excited about what's to come and how the next in the next space the next kind of
12:04
collection I guess part two of paw Patrol so what is your size range my thighs
12:11
range is from 12 to 34 oh and everything
12:18
are size 12 to 34 and the tops were from size 1 to 6 which a 1 if I could fire
12:25
1214 no but yeah I've worked on that size range for a while because I would
12:31
do fashion shows and I would dress models and it just didn't seem like it extend it long enough
12:38
mm-hmm I want this to stand long enough because when I'm on the run where I'm
12:43
getting ready for Fashion Show I want a size 4 by 1 to 14 I want a 20 I want a 28 I want a 34 on the runway so that
12:51
everybody can see this is for all of these different body types and height
12:58
but all of these different heights body types everything you can wear along next to skirt and defy for or be 510 it just
13:06
doesn't matter so that was important to me very important to me make sure that
13:12
every size was represented in the brain and that's beautiful because a lot of
13:17
brands right now like when they're showcasing their pieces like everyone 10 says for the longest time tended to stop
13:24
out of 24 and now we're getting pushed back to 28 and now we're getting some
13:30
brands that are doing a 32 so for you to bring in a 34 but you are really breaking that mold and really being
13:37
inclusive to what we have available like you know especially making plus-size
13:42
fashion accessible beyond you know just the traditional 14 to 24 so I appreciate
13:50
that it was very important one of my
13:56
models she's really the reason tanita we didn't reason why I went to a 34 because
14:03
we were dressing for a fashion show and I felt bad like I should have something for you to wear long and so because I
14:11
don't have anything for you to wear that means that there are plenty of people out here like the model you know who are
14:19
looking for designer so that was that was very crucial was to make sure that
14:24
you go to a 34 everybody should have something to wear so we've just posted up some pictures
14:31
and we're posting up as we're talking so you can continue to talk work dropping in a couple of teasing of the images of
14:37
what's available in the collection so that folks know like what you're what you offer and what they can expect so
14:44
you can't see it right now right you can't see right now but they're popping up so as you guys are seeing different
14:50
images make sure you give hearts to the images that you like so that you know when she comes back it looks like that
14:56
she could see what people are really loving the most and just to kind of give an idea
15:02
now this yellow top that the girl is wearing in your pictures is this what you have on it is okay okay okay oh this
15:12
is one of my babies it's actually not a part of the collection this is the shirt
15:17
I think I made three or four years ago actually and I brought it to the photo
15:24
shoot and I just put it on her and it looks really really good with the pleated skirt skirt when she's not
15:31
doesn't have this my custom-built and I do custom built in myself what is custom
15:38
belting well the custom built-ins that I do I wish I could show you but it's
15:44
pretty much I wanted to find a way to put elastic or to make things adjustable
15:51
without using so much elastic in my in my garbage so I came up with this system
15:58
and I call it my custom built in that I can put in and I put my own little belts
16:05
in there the hammock everything and that way when you buy the pleated skirt or
16:10
some of my skirts you buy the size up and when you adjust it it looks so
16:16
gorgeous how smooth it flows down but that way if you were to lose weight you
16:23
can still wear your skirt so then and of course like everything doesn't have
16:28
elastic in it elastic of course the more you wash it of course it can build and everything but I just wanted to give a more stylish
16:36
look to it without so much elastic and that's why I came up with the built-in system and I usually in some of my
16:43
skirts and is some of my tops too that's brilliant that's brilliant get it
16:49
girl I'm impressed so what other details what other small details in the collection can we pay
16:55
attention to like that you give that's like the Shonda nice like touch the
17:02
ruffles that I do I'm not trying to say this in any type of way but most of
17:08
ruffles when people do it they kind of lay flat then I said this shirt is three
17:13
years old the who's that I do now they flow I mean just just sitting still it just moves
17:21
when the last are blowing state moves it doesn't lay flat on their chest it just
17:27
I just want you to have that flow and elegance when you're walking our sway
17:33
and I wanted to make sure that my ruffles didn't just lay kind of flat on
17:38
the chest that they moved every time you swear when you walk just to give it that silhouette and that that's sexiness
17:45
right all we do with that gone with the wind I go with the wind I can't swing in
17:50
the air but swinging had your swing okay and that was the idea and the image that
17:55
I saw when I start doing ruffles and I do them in a way a design way that they
18:01
come in panels and the more panels you have the more flow you have in the
18:06
ruffles and so that's something that I think once people get used to my brand they start seeing they're like oh that's
18:13
flowing they look so much there must be paint my Shanti that's that's what I'm
18:18
hoping to come out from that got it and so you know what is something that you
18:24
haven't made yet but you want to make or that you've seen and you're like hmm how
18:32
can I make this mind like what's something that you really want to tackle
18:38
hmm um I definitely want to get into gowns more okay but more subtle detail
18:46
gowns I gave draw illustrator collection maybe
18:52
a year or so ago but the detailing is so it's so insane I can't I can't do it by
19:00
myself I make everything now by myself I don't have a team that helps me
19:05
manufacture the clothing I sew design you got a pattern so hopefully at some
19:11
point when I'm able to build a team that
19:16
collection to bring it to light so everyone can see it I mean it's so so
19:22
heavily detail but doing gals and doing more detail where and just stuff that you normally would
19:29
not see out especially for plus-size fashion so I'm going to challenge you I
19:36
don't know about y'all listening in but we want to see this and you deserve it
19:41
to yourself to to take that sketch and this may also help you become more
19:49
resourceful and finding like an expert beater or al agent a lace maker or you
19:55
know to expand your resources so you've got you've been challenged okay
20:02
I'm pushing you out of your comfort zone because I surely do like a girl where where's this dress okay right right you
20:11
know they don't like this is you know like for us like they think that I think that I've learned through like
20:16
especially now is like this we've slowed down but it's also made us more
20:22
introspective and looking at our goals like our real desires and dreams and motivations and really help us like
20:30
really push ourselves because we don't want to be to be stuck at I wonder what
20:36
if it's now it's like girl is now or never so why are you because you're not
20:43
going to just start the dress tomorrow like you can design it you can like
20:51
design that you can reach them you can resource it so then you can then map out backwards like oh I want a gown to go
20:58
live by Black Friday for the holiday season because you know just in case and
21:06
then you know you go from there because I'm sure somebody's wearing a gown on that Instagram live if not right they go
21:15
to the grocery store in a little fancy dresses I'm just saying they will so
21:21
you've been challenged okay and we haven't vacuumed either you've got folks here we've got folks here Jill said yes
21:29
do it we want to see and I was like challenge extended I mean you've got
21:35
folks here who are gonna help hold you okay because that's how we grow you may bring
21:41
eyes and making gowns that you have you may have an epiphany and different types
21:46
of dresses and variations that are watered down like a diffusion of that gown for everyday wear may come into
21:53
play right right so you have to you have
21:58
the ability and you know I think you got this we just say yes yeah definitely
22:09
when I am able to hire more centrists and beaters and everything under
22:16
underneath it's a go I'm ready I'm
22:21
definitely ready mentally let me say but it's definitely your process but my goal
22:26
is to open a manufacturing I've been at
22:36
a lot of times you know can you help me with this I can you help me establish or
22:41
draw this pattern I write a pattern now and I have worked with people just to kind of help them out because I do
22:47
understand as a new designer especially when you're manufacturing everything that you do it's time-consuming mass
22:57
production is hard and if I could be any you know give any advice to somebody
23:04
that's new I try my best to try to say hey this is the process I'll read this
23:09
book because there is a book on it that is just brilliant read this book and and go from there but
23:16
the goal is to manufacture fully not only just my clothing line but the other brands that I plan to
23:23
bring on as well and for other people you said other brands like that you
23:28
launched it or other brands that you're just supporting through your production oh no that I plan on launching oh I'm
23:35
working on the men's line jeggings how old big or tall and I say big or tile
23:41
because one of the feedback that I get man is that hey I'm sure for I need
23:48
pants with a certain extreme but I'm also a 40 44 inches in the waist so big
23:54
are tall men's line that I'm definitely working on I want to do home decor my
24:01
daughter yes I have two daughters and one of them is she is going to be a
24:07
fashion designer that's all that she talks about joy so she wants to do a Church's line so I have a lot of things
24:12
that you have no Emily of brands ready to go oh yes I'm done a little research
24:22
here and there and we put out stamping I put out samples I've done samples for
24:27
those collections I just kind of haven't said too much about the old book okay
24:37
collections will be coming out definitely the man's in the mixture well
24:46
first of all congrats on that news you know like it's funny because this is the
24:53
time where I've actually I have like three other ideas outside of the Kirby
24:59
fashionista that I've been getting ready to try to line up to launch and then you
25:06
know then I have other ideas within the brand that I'm like okay this is what we need a pivot how we need a pivot because
25:11
for me we were going to have our TC FX in LA this summer but that's been
25:17
changed and you know who knows what December is gonna look like that's our anniversary month I wanted to finally
25:23
have an anniversary party in out in Atlanta who knows what's gonna happen
25:28
like for you how has like what has
25:34
probably been your biggest like aha i opening experience in this time like in
25:39
this time um to be completely honest I
25:45
was really surprised that people were still shopping because even for me I've
25:51
gotten received orders during this whole thing and so that changed my mindset because normally I go I go in to
25:59
sympathize and I guess you can say when I'm just like oh man this is so but I
26:05
realized that you know with everything going on I lost the college classmates
26:12
of Colby and I've had family members that have been sick so with everything
26:17
that's going on you know you still have to live you still have to continue our
26:23
goals have to still be met we still have to figure out a way to proceed and go on
26:28
and so that was the biggest thing for me is figuring out well what do I do now
26:34
everything is pretty much changed the way we used to live the things that we
26:39
used to do has changed I wanted to do a pop-up shop I was supposed to do one in April and now I'm thinking like well how
26:47
do you do pop-up shops now you know I don't wanna I also have a non-contact
26:54
temperature I don't know what it's called exactly but I don't want to check people's temperature every time they
27:00
come to a pop-up shop but this is the reality of what we're living in right now I know it shows you sure I know what
27:07
you can down the costume so we need to have a patient based on the nice
27:12
Instagram live pop-up shop so you what is what are your daughter's plus not not
27:21
really no because I'm saying they can fit a sample but basically you know you
27:27
figure out like either you put it on a mannequin or you have to display it all pretty you can have Instagram lives
27:33
deals right specials that are just for today and you showcase and you do that
27:38
do that a little QVC Instagram situation and boom I love it but you know the new
27:48
number great idea you remember each item and and then when
27:53
people you know the first person to comment and you'll DM them and like you know pay this is much or whatever and then you said ship it off I
28:00
don't know all the intricacies of that but you know something like that yeah
28:06
that's a great idea I have plenty of mannequins so I can definitely do something like that yeah I love kids
28:14
there we go you say plenty how many mannequins you back home you can part with one cuz I totally want a mannequin
28:20
I think I have four because they're not the they're not the ones that have the
28:26
legs it is the torsos that's okay okay okay
28:33
right so okay so as we've gone through
28:39
these realizations and now you you've got you been challenged I think I've challenged you and I'm giving you an
28:44
idea okay right so we have some follow-ups to go on or two to go through
28:51
after this like what is something that
28:56
you feel like you probably wouldn't have done if not for this if not for
29:09
everything that's going on in the world right now mm-hmm I'm a firm believer that everything
29:17
happens for a reason so like I had the
29:23
shows and everything for April which of course I was disappointed because I was
29:28
rolling out the second half of the collection mm-hmm but I always believe
29:36
that God always sends a sign or he sends a message or there's certain things that
29:41
happen you always end up where you need to be so even though was thoroughly
29:48
disappointed about those fashion shows at the same time it was not the time for
29:53
me to do those shows okay and I feel like when they come to
29:59
later this year I make sure that the timing and everything will be in the
30:04
line that I don't have to worry about it it gave me a second chance and I don't
30:14
have any regrets or anything that I will change because everything align that is
30:22
so beautiful like I literally got a little teary eyed I'm not gonna say like you just kind of some of the things you
30:28
just said right there and we're like I'm just really resonated like right here it
30:33
resonated right here like for me I realized that a lot of the things that I
30:39
have sometimes minimized myself or played down like my ideas and thoughts
30:45
I've been scared sometimes and if anything like this time is actually allowed for me to map out all of the
30:54
dreams and goals that I do have and set into motion those to make them happen because I'm you know forced to sit like
31:03
