Hey Girl hey I read the name welcome back - speaking of curves this is a
0:07
Facebook live series that we've been doing to show support to give love to
0:12
celebrate the small businesses in the plus-size space especially to showcase
0:17
ways that we can support them so that they kind of make their way through like
0:23
everything that's going on in the world right now right we've had different designers stylists influencers boutique
0:29
owners businesses and today we have a very special guest that's with us like
0:35
one of my close friends I've known her forever but before we go there we have to give some very special love like I
0:42
feel like we are growing up right we have a sponsor for our Facebook Live series like they love the messaging that
0:49
we had with our small businesses they just announced their own promotion Fiverr is actually our sponsor and fiber
0:57
actually is kicking off their micro grant loan micro grant series and
1:03
they're hooking up three small businesses each month with $1,000 in
1:09
credits to fiber now for many of you guys if you're anything like me like the way that the world has changed you still
1:16
need work to do you may not have all your employees like using fiber is
1:21
extremely helpful so that you can find like special people special independent
1:28
contractors people who are very how do you say experienced in those certain
1:33
things so finding content if I need a logo if I need graphic design anything I need I can go to Fiverr to hire someone
1:40
so make sure you check the link that gives you all the information from the application to win $1,000 so three
1:47
winners each month dude so you can enter for this month can enter for next month and maybe the next month after okay
1:55
$1,000 in credits is a lot you could do a whole lot of good work over on Fiverr
2:03
so anyways I had to get that out the way so our special guest I've known her I want I want to save in
2:11
like eight or nine years maybe longer but we know her or we have actively
2:17
dubbed her the Naomi as plus she's got a walk she has been she was the plus size
2:24
winner of Project Runway the model she was the model winner she has like
2:31
literally beauty runways Bridal lingerie
2:36
like this model everyone knows especially just by first name so I want
2:42
you guys to do me a favor as you're tuning in if you have questions drop your questions if you have comments if
2:49
you have things you want to know as we're asking and interviewing drop them also let us know where you're tuning in
2:54
from because we love to have that information in that conversation going but do me a favor let's welcome Miss
2:59
lares cross hello leiris hello how are you I'm good thank you so much for
3:06
joining us thank you for such a beautiful intro I appreciate it I mean
3:11
girl 100 like we we have we have gone
3:16
there right like we've been around like for years it feels like I mean it is yours
3:21
it's been a minute it's been a minute uh-huh well I have to say first of all
3:27
congratulations on all your successes because you keep on finding ways to level up even as we're going through
3:35
this I guess you know with the Rona here you're still booking gigs you're still
3:42
working you're still like innovating you have a book you do coaching like girl
3:49
talk to us a little bit how about have you got started because that will that's a story that's on this stuff so tell us
3:55
how you got started oh my gosh well pretty much I'm originally from Baltimore Maryland and I
4:02
grew up with a I would say innate love for modeling as a little girl my dad was
4:09
running for Congress and he had target for coming out to our house to
4:14
shoot campaign I'm sure and he took pictures of my dad taking pictures of us
4:20
at the family and then said you mind if I take some extra pictures of your younger daughter they said okay cool he
4:27
comes back in a couple weeks yes his big like 8 by 10 picture of me sitting in my dad's big chair and he's
4:34
like she's really photogenic and should really get her in his money so that was
4:39
the seed that was planted and I just always believed that I could do it and
4:45
so you know time passed so I'm doing like local mall fashion shows and stuff
4:50
like that and there was a convention that came to down a model to mention and they invited me to their masks you
4:57
mention I go to the master mention they have all the top agencies in the country
5:02
there and they walk the runway they show
5:08
two pictures of yourself and then at the end that agency gives you callbacks if they're interested so I
5:15
got callbacks from two agencies that are no longer around but also Elite models
5:23
and Seventeen magazine so you know as a girl in high school I was getting Seventeen magazine I was subscribed to
5:29
it so it felt really good but being a year-round athlete as well guess what
5:36
they wanted me to lose weight and I'm like lose weight where what are you talking about I got muscle this is
5:42
muscle Drive unaware exactly exactly so that was my junior year I try to do
5:48
the extra workouts and starvation thing but if you follow me on Instagram
5:53
you know I'm a big foodie so that didn't last but for so long but I did lose some
5:59
weight I went back to the convention my senior year and I got even less callbacks so I graduated high school and
6:08
I was all in the world to go to college but something told me to move to New York to pursue my dreams of modeling and
6:15
I spoke to my parents and said something's telling me I just need to go
6:20
I don't want to say what shut up and thank God I had a father who
6:25
was an entrepreneur and he saw something in me and he didn't want me to say what
6:31
it coulda shoulda so it will give you a year for you to test this out and see what happens
6:36
and I ended up moving to New York that Christmas day of that year and I went to
6:45
the agencies as soon as they opened up after New Year's the first agency that I want you for their open call told me I
6:52
was really beautiful but they needed me to lose weight and I'm thinking well I'm just up here trying to find a commercial
6:58
agent you know whatever so then something told me to reach back out to
7:03
the people from the models convention I did I went to their offices pictures of
7:08
me took my measurements they told me they were gonna send me to a agency that had women that looked like me and I said
7:16
okay whatever that meant and they ended up sending me to Illumina models and to
7:21
their plus division I didn't know that plus mildly exists it but when I got
7:27
there and I saw the women's comp cards on the board and so wow that you look like you know beautiful models for more
7:34
meat on their bones so if this is where I have to be to make my dreams come true so be it and I'm glad I did now I will
7:43
have to say I don't know if you guys caught that but she mentioned how she took that leap of faith and just jumped
7:51
into it now a lot of times we have all these ideas we have all these goals I mean how like for many people in this
7:57
time they're pivoting and there is having to adjust and oftentimes we have ideas or we have visions or we have
8:04
goals and they sit in this one space of like I want to do this and it never
8:11
manifest into anything else like it just sits there like so for any of you guys who have like these goals and dreams and
8:17
ideas that you want to do like take a take a note out of lares his book she took that leap and she also surrounded
8:24
herself with people who believed in their vision to help encourage her
8:29
okay because that encouraged me because there are some dream killers around oh yeah I actually I talked about that in
8:36
my book about how of the posture like models our posture is important how
8:42
where our bodies are aligned but who are you on lines in your life who is it well it's the passion of the people in your
8:48
life and how those people as far as networking your network are of people
8:56
artists are supposed to help raise you up they're supposed to lift you up especially in the fields that we work in
9:04
bring us what do they found network is your net were these denials people that
9:09
say I see you I got you you can do this don't give up you need those people in
9:16
your corner to keep that that posture I realize it makes it straight I think that that posture like that posture in
9:23
your life get it yes okay okay so fast for because you have modeled not only
9:29
work have you acted but you have modeled for some names girl like real quick-like
9:37
let them know why we call you the Naomi of quest like go ahead and drop some some things that folks may recognize you
9:44
in lol I became the first one of the first quest model winners to one of the
9:52
first plus models to win the model portion of Project Runway I also uh
9:59
let's see I also have done campaigns for Lane Brian actually sword I have walked
10:09
runways for full figured Fashion Week for I was the first black plus model to
10:15
walk for Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week which is the highest that you're going to get in the bridal market
10:22
I am also currently the spokesperson for Maggie Sottero designs which is a
10:28
rivalry that makes dresses for every love story from sizes 2 to 28 so there's been so
10:37
many things that I've been able to accomplish also another thing figured Fashion Week models a year a couple
10:44
years ago so literally the list keeps going on and on that was 2017 yep get it
10:52
well congratulations and thank you didn't you do something I feel like you
10:57
did campaigns I got out like a throwback campaign it's like older like in your
11:03
you've done some celebrity campaigns I feel like or you did something with a celebrity really I've done a lot of
11:10
stuff and I almost forget your resume is
11:15
girl so okay we talked a little bit about your resume that's totally fine sis like I know because we talk often
11:23
you shared with me that you have a new initiative as a model but you are a
11:31
businesswoman and you will look new approach things very strategically from a business perspective and you have
11:36
created an initiative with some other folks can you talk to us a little bit about this initiative and what it's
11:43
about well I am a part of a collective of models who it's a black model leg
11:53
initiative called models for change now and I'm so glad to be a part and support
12:00
them they're kicking off a challenge today with the hashtag is my black model
12:05
lights and when we speak to black model sex everybody that's male/female trans
12:14
everybody so we want to be able to get those stories out there because it's
12:21
important for people to understand what we go through in this industry it amazes
12:28
me how some Caucasian people are so
12:33
surprised because of some of the things that are going on in our world things that are
12:39
have gone on in the entertainment from fashion to music and they just thought
12:44
that everything was okay and it hasn't been right and even then what influences
12:51
you and I both know we've talked about these things about their I remember can I tell you can I tell you one part I
12:57
remember on a shoot like they didn't have any foundation for any black women
13:03
they didn't have any they didn't have anything for my eyebrows the guy tried
13:09
to use a black eyeliner for my eyebrows and stopping to me before it's like it
13:16
was the most humiliating scene because I was like what is going on like why don't what do you mean you don't have you have
13:22
pictures of our faces and you know what we look like why weren't you prepared like it yeah
13:31
and then you have to suck it up because then you don't want to turn to like the whole angry black chick right right
13:36
that's been one of the things and I think it's surprising because some of
13:42
these agents and magazine editors feel like I never knew that and I think it's
13:49
because black models know that there has been so much tokenism whether it's
13:54
straight size or plus-size within our industry that they're like well let me
14:00
be glad that I have this one spot that's open a great black model I don't want to
14:06
speak and mess it up because many times I have sat in the makeup chair known
14:12
that I am literally looking like a clown but you don't want to rock the boat
14:20
too much because you don't want them to say oh gosh she's just always complaining she's never satisfied with
14:27
the makeup she's never satisfied with the hair and this is the first time I'm
14:32
going as long as I've been alive where I ain't felt so free to talk about race where I
14:38
have felt so free to talk about my journey as a model I have spoken up for years about what we go through as far as
14:46
black models as far as tokenism as far as black plus models not kidding no
14:52
rightful amount of opportunities within our industry to try to make the same amount of money to be on the same
14:59
campaigns I've spoken about it tirelessly and I hate to say I've had a lot of the black models follow me the
15:08
Emmys thank you so much I love it and then I go to their page and I'm like well why didn't you share the article on Facebook
15:15
why don't you tweet about it why don't you share this tweet they've been so
15:20
scared just to share a article with somebody else so out for them mm-hmm
15:27
that's how much fear they felt and this is why I've talked tired even in my
15:35
mother kids just to let the new generation of models know that you and
15:40
your model artists you and your modeling agent arts team your partnership it's not a dictatorship to you you're able to
15:49
do you just want to do I think so so many young women come into our industry and make it stick I'm into whatever my
15:55
agent says you know I'm just gonna do it's almost like they take a back seat
16:01
to their own career and I can I'm reckon oh you need to stand in the power of who
16:07
you are you need to make wise counsel of choice of course you took your wise
16:12
counsel but you are still in the driving seat of your life you were still in the privacy of your career but this is the
16:19
first time that we as black models have been able to speak out so freely about
16:27
the things we go through with our hair with our make up the tokenism not being
16:34
invited to castings just there's so many things that go on and it's about to come
16:41
out when you check the hashtag my black model like this month there's gonna be going
16:47
hand sharing their stories sharing their truth because people need to empathize and understand what we've been going
16:54
through the gears so shout out to my collective and I will say that it's even
17:00
more even more interesting given that we were both featured in the Style caster
17:06
article this style caster article that recognizes you know have recognized us
17:13
both for being kind of leaders of change in the Plus space you know recognizing
17:18
black women in the plus space who have helped usher it forward and so it's like
17:23
you know different publications and the industry is starting to recognize like women of color helped move plus-sized
17:29
fashion forward but we're still fighting yes just sometimes for them everyday
17:36
recognition yeah we I mean you know I
17:42
had a certain Twitter battle with a certain person towards the end of last
17:48
year and she was just saying she said where's and I'm like Hello wait and you
17:55
didn't even have to say because everyone else jumped in and was like she's right there and you're like I don't know I
18:04
don't know who that is and we're like but but but I realize it's because and this is what I was
18:10
trying to get to her because we are put at such a
18:15
disadvantage within our industry we don't get the same platforms campaign
18:26
opportunity to shine if I'm not getting booked as much I don't have the same
18:31
amount of money to spend on the publicist who can blow up my situation
18:37
in various company that is a major company it's not even if they're gonna
18:44
go with a white bus model for me how am I gonna get that major makeup campaign
18:49
great or do this or do that right you don't even know about me such a bigger broader scale on an on the
18:56
mainstream level this is what we're trying to get out there we just want to save opportunities as everyone else and
19:05
we we're sick of the toe penis we're sick of it just being one of us it's so
19:11
many times I work on sets and I am the only black person there and I'm not just
19:16
talking about this black model on the back end to the production you don't
19:22
have a black hair person makeup production assistant photographer shoot
19:30
producer nobody I am the only black person there that's a problem and that
19:36
has to change and this is why I'm excited that the collective models for
19:42
change is going to be speaking out about that and really pushing for a change for
19:47
black models and you and I also talked about how a lot of times especially with
19:56
well I see it in the straight size too you know there's only been two types
20:02
that are really show we have the ethnically ambiguous black girl and then we have that African African s black
20:11
girl and we're like who's that where's the model that looks like Marie where's
20:16
the model that looks like Liris where's the model that looks like jasmine where's the model that looks like reality you know just the
20:23
african-american girl she wants to be recognized too we want all of our sisters shine because
20:30
that's the beauty of blackness we have somebody who who is like skin they may have straighter hair we also have
20:37
someone who may have a bald head or a low-cut and has great cheekbones and
20:43
African features but we want to be able to show the myriad of colors the beauty of us and that is it's just time for
20:51
change now now so everybody out there in facebook
20:57
land please go follow on Instagram and on Facebook models for change
21:03
and if your model who is watching this simulcast right now you need to go to
21:09
the page and get all the information on the my black model life hashtag social
21:17
media challenge and be a part let your voice be heard we want all these different companies and brands to see
21:24
our story so they can know what they've been doing wrong but also build a
21:30
certain level of compassion so they can really create the change that we want to see now I'm gonna actually take it back
21:37
a little bit and what you've just shared cuz you just gave us so many gems and so many nuggets you spoke to the newer
21:44
models you reference the newer models so for you if you guys don't really if you guys are just jumping in this is our
21:50
speaking of curves face book series where we interview very small business owners influencers leaders in the
21:57
plus-size space right so we're trying to learn different ways to support to help champion and to help uplift our small
22:05
businesses so they can they can continue like strong throughout this the rona and
22:11
I can make it confidently on the other side so yes we have special guest lives
22:16
cross super uber model are not only us plus great like don't get it twisted we
22:23
have her here we're talking about a little bit about all of them all these different things about Liris about the
22:28
business of modeling the business of being a black model a black plus-size model and you mentioned your model book
22:35
Karen's your mom boot camps and and talking about the education that's needed for these upcoming models now not
22:44
only do you have a boot camp but strategically placed behind you you have your book I do make the world your
22:52
runway so can you speak to why the education part is so important for you
22:57
to make sure you give back and kind of speak to you someone like the importance of giving back and helping mentor other
23:03
people well we've heard it a million times education is power and it's the
23:10
truth when you get educated about the modeling industry it helps to put you a few steps
23:16
ahead of the people who are learning it as they go not only that it empowers you
23:22
gives it give you a second level of confidence when you know the facts when you know the business when you're able
23:27
to navigate a little bit better it helps you to avoid pitfalls why fall
23:35
to a scam why fall into a bad contract when you can really study and get the
23:42
education from somebody like me and there are a lot of people who teach model classes but the thing about me is
23:48
I been modeling in this business for over a decade so I have and I'm still
23:56
model let's be clear about that so I tried and true and I actually know the
24:02
business I wanted to create my life of a working model boot camp you can find us
24:07
here on Facebook as well because I wanted to give tools to the next generation of models no matter
24:15
their age no matter their size no matter their race no matter their gender I wanted to educate the most information
24:22
to avoid things that I could have fell into or did fall into mmm-hmm and I
24:31
wanted them to get quality information from quality quality business
24:36
professionals within our industry and that's a key right that's key right now
24:42
because everybody has opinions everyone can share what they think but there's a whole business operation in this world
24:49
so just starting off because someone said you're pretty is one thing but
24:54
understanding the business of pretty in the whole other yes yes yes and like yes
25:01
and I appreciate that you have these classes and these courses often times I'm always getting asked and you've
25:07
contributed articles to our site before because people keep asking me oh my girl I don't know you need to go and follow
25:13
her give me the phone you take a class like because I'm not I'm not in the modeling space that's not
25:19
my name we made feature models with me you know talk about like you know the importance
25:24
of this model but when it comes to like the profession and how to get started
25:29
out on that space that's not that's not my calling so I happily pass the mic
25:35
over to you thank you and I'm glad that you do and the thing I love is I've had
25:43
models who have come to my mother we can't prove gone into sign with major agencies walk in major runway shows and
25:51
that makes me feel good I almost called them like all up who come to my model
25:56
who can't no matter what age they are they like my mild Rijn and to see you
26:02
know to watch different ones grow and flourish within the industry has been inspiring some still modeling some not
26:11
modeling and but they've been saying they still said you know what you gave
26:16
me tools to still navigate life and
26:22
that's pretty much what my book is about it's taking model events and lessons
26:29
from my life and expounding upon them and almost like a life coach way so it's
26:35
make the world your runway type model secrets for everyday confidence and success the whole word is written by Tim
26:42
Gunn formerly a project runway now of making the cut and it's available on
26:48
Amazon worldwide if you would like a signed copy you have to go to Lyra see calm it's a little bit more for the
26:55
signed copy but it's not you can local sort of Amazon and this I tell people
27:01
this is not a book that I have to push on you this is a book that if you want a
27:09
deep in mindset if you want to help
27:16
deepen yourself as far as in your purpose renew your mindset if you want
27:21
to you know get tips to look and feel like the model this is the book for you
27:28
but this isn't for you to be your best lyrics to be a copycat of lyrics this is
27:34
the manual to help you to be the best you alright to help you to be the best
27:40
you mentally physically and spiritually because it all plays a part there are
27:46
different points in the book where I talk about your how your presence is important how your posture is important
27:53
how standing in your power is important how prayer is is important because guess
27:59
what as a model we are beat up mentally and emotionally so much because of all
28:05
the knows that we go through that prayer is my stabilizer it's that thing that centers me and brings me back it gives
28:13
me strength and that's not something that I just use that I can just use
28:20
that's what anybody can use out there standing in your power is important because I stand in my power at the end
28:28
of the runway or when I'm in a photo shoot in front of the camera but how do you stand in your power when you're
28:34
walking across the graduation stage when you're walking into that interview for the first time after you just got your
28:41
college degree when you're going on that first stage when you're walking down the aisle as a bride you should be standing
28:48
in your power so I explore all these things in the book and like I said go
28:54
get it so you can be your best you I mean hello so there's and so for you
29:02
that you have a path that is very visibly business and I speak to you and
29:08
I call to the business elements because you present like the evolution of the
29:15
best you know the business part that is help leverage and give you that like you know stronger platform for you to stand
29:22
on and you've really understood and you nurturing those elements um how has it
29:29
been kind of got weathering the the road right now like how have you been weathering it as a business owner well
29:37
I'm gonna say this it just I felt it
29:44
gave me a chance to slow down organize but also get creative
29:51
I started different lines of my t-shirt line I also sold more books I did a I
30:02
did my life of a working model bootcamp for free online through Instagram for a
30:08
week I also had a lyrics motivates me
30:13
because a lot of people say I breathe motivation and inspiration so I have another hashtag called lyrics motivates
30:18
and I would have along motivational speakers to help speak and give inspiration and motivation where people
30:25
are feeling so lost and now to me it just made me more creative it made me
30:30
learn it helped me to start to prepare for the next wave of where I'm going I
30:40
call it a pivot we've had to pivot we've pivoted and adjusted and shift done so
30:46
yeah things slowed down but for some reason I found myself even busier I'm like I lose here I'm busier yeah I mean
30:53
I'm literally out of my apartment and changed it around you know I need to
31:01
change my apartment that I needed to be soup here I'm a little shoot so I bought
31:07
my own equipment to create my own studio within mine come on come through with the innovation I mean we have to you
31:14
know it's like as an entrepreneur as a business owner like it's almost kind of built in us to seek out solutions and to
31:23
create them ourselves like you know figure the instead of waiting for something like you know as an
31:29
entrepreneur as a business owner we finding different ways to make it happen and we can't just end and we're almost
31:34
like control freaks mm-hmm I won't just deny that we could be we commune oh but
31:41
we also don't want to wait we're in pace we want to do it and make it happen any
31:46
girl I have two additional sites that I'm working on that I've started since that's like yeah we'll find out later
31:53
but you know I have two different things that additional projects and I have like two additional projects not related to
32:00
those sites that I'm also working on I'm like whoa you know and then it's like there's a lot going on and and it's kind
32:08
of exciting to see like how like what's in you like I remember you saying like
32:13
you never know how strong you are on your backs against the wall and as a business owner you know our backs are
32:19
against the wall right now like our whole foundation has been rocked with as world pausing and you really figure out
32:26
just like how dope you are how innovative you can be and then I found
32:32
that I have been on it networking with more business owners especially through this series where
32:38
they've been able to pour into me and I answer them and we're able to really connect and I feel more recharged girl
32:44
be you felt you found new connections and that's important you thought new
32:49
purpose and that's important I mean it's amazed me how many people have reached
32:55
out to me for speaking gigs where I don't even have to leave my house and I
33:01
am still getting me okay so let me do it
33:06
he sure we don't put money won't he will and found this I mean you have given us
33:13
so many gems and I can't believe that are gone hole 30 minutes is already up girl like this is like we have been you
33:20
know because we can go in I know if we don't have to catch ourselves we probably be going for another 30 minutes that's just how they do it would be on
33:26
the phone for like two hours but I wanted to thank you for being a guest and as I mentioned earlier like this
33:33
