a new foundation um i tried the new fenty beauty foundation

and i had a pic online and that's the scariest thing like shopping for foundations as a black

woman is already insane but i had to show her and how to get a thumbs up from her like that was my goal and she was like

you did good girl so i wanted to make sure i did good because like trying to find out the

colors you know i was i was intense like intense but i am wearing her eyeshadow i don't know

yummy golden hue and it goes on like butter almost like it's so smooth like

the application of your of your of your eyeshadows and so um for those people who don't know you

tell us a little bit about bob's beauty and why you started it okay so

if if you haven't heard my story it goes like this i was allergic to everything

and that is really how i started the cosmetic line so um i started out doing makeup

and doing um other people's makeup and then i was like oh i want to wear more makeup other than

just you know lip gloss um but then i started having all these weird reactions

and long story short went to allergist and found out i'm allergic to like a laundry list

of ingredients it's food it's topical so that's how we figured out it was also

in like my hair products and um cosmetics and things like that body care and all of that

um so of course i had my list and i would go shopping with my list and i would still have allergic reactions

to products that weren't supposed to have ingredients that i wasn't allergic to right so that's when i discovered that

uh companies do not have to list all of the ingredients if it's under a certain percentage

but even the smallest percentage for me had me looking like hitch literally and that was not cute so um

i wanted to come up with a line initially of just lip colors um that were for sensitive

skin or people with sensitivities and at least if

it wasn't something that excuse me at least we could go through the ingredient list because i would go to counters and

be like hey do you have like a full ingredient list and of course they couldn't produce one so at least being able to sit with

customers and say do you know specifically what you're allergic to let's make sure that's not in this product um but for the majority of products

i found that i was reacting to the preservatives in products um so if you think about it a lot of

these larger companies are mass producing products so they have to have preservatives in them right

because they're making millions of that one lipstick and sending them out to all the stores so that it can last for

two months three months three years waiting for you to buy it so our products don't have those

preservatives in them um but it also doesn't cut down on the shelf life um so that's kind of how i started with

the cosmetics line and uh it grew from the lipstick to the full cosmetic line like you mentioned we

have foundations lipsticks concealers powders lashes um and then all the accessories that go

with it as well and so let's see so how long so and you also have

really focusing on the waxing services just because we're not too comfortable

yet with doing facials um we'll do body facials but anything where the mask comes off we're really

not comfortable with that right now um but we are a full service beauty bar so we say we do everything besides

you know the traditional facial then of course we have back facials so if you have back acne um we do have a facial for that but then

we also have a full body facial that we offer so full body facial includes a nice exfoliation of your

right now is the chocolate mud mask so chocolate a chocolate mask goes all over your body um and that helps to

of like love on ourselves so whether it's makeup or whether it's like services like facials and facials

calling you to facial um or you know just a nice skin exfoliation

or waxing or whatever those things it's necessary and finding ways to kind of take that

being provided at a time and we try not to have our clients cross paths um just so that's a safe and comfortable

and we actually change our retail hours to saturdays only um from 11 to 7 p.m and that again is

um of course closing down the shop luckily um we do have our online presence in our

our online store that we were able to kind of pivot more and focus more in that direction than

our actual storefront at the beauty bar um so we were able to still reach our

local customers through our online store and through social media

and through our facebook group to help them kind of get through the challenges of all of your beauty

and like the girls were like okay so what are we doing in in in place of are we just going to grow

hairy are we just going to let our brows just like do its own thing like what are we doing to maintain and

manage because for some of us like you said it's like a habit it's how we find our solace how we take care of ourselves

how we feel good about ourselves and so now that you're kind of like

you know finding a new sense of normal right because there's no back to the old ways there's no none of

that that doesn't exist but for you because you had your communities already set up

you found yourself tapping those and leaning into those communities correct yes yes definitely um and so for if you

could say to any other business owner who's carnage or aspiring business owner right

who is coming into who's kind of like this time has been more of a launch pad for some people

they've started you know they started ideating or planning or putting into fruition like their goals

and dreams of starting a business what would you say if you could impart one piece of advice especially in this

transition like what would you say to them oh wow anytime you're gonna ask me those

type of deep questions no um you just finished so many gyms and i'm hoping that you can reiterate that

yeah definitely um i would say definitely for service providers um and

this is something that i was uh i hate to use the word preach but this is something i was preaching before

being grown up um as service providers you have to have something else right you have to have something else

because you know what what if you get sick you know what i'm saying what it what if what if you can't provide this you just

can't provide that service anymore um and then now where we are presently what happens when

something exterior happens that you have to close your business what do you do in the meantime you know

so i think the the biggest tip that i always have for entrepreneurs is to diversify your business um so

that's why when i get all my lives you know i'm like i'm an aesthetician i'm a makeup artist and i'm a

beauty business educator right so you diversify yourself come on commas

you diversify your streams of income and but i also like to tag with that you

diversify in your space right so you know you don't for me this this is my advice

i say you don't want to and i'll use me for example i don't want to do makeup and bake cakes and sew dresses

and do event this and do this right you want to diversify in your space so that when people think

about you they think about oh she does makeup but she also has a

cosmetic line and she also teaches other people how to do what she does right in that space versus it being

when they think of nisha well she bakes cakes and she does makeup and she does this does that right what

what is your space right so diversify your streams of income that are coming in for you but stay within your industry

and in your space i'm not to say that there is not success in doing something completely left field

but i think definitely starting out you have to kind of create that niche for yourself um so that people can recognize who you are
