Meet Annika of The Stylish Reid!
Location: Toronto, Ontario
How long have you been blogging?
What or who inspired you to become a fashion blogger? What led you to it?
I initially started my journey with fashion over 8 years ago as a fashion designer. My company back then was called “Candi Apple Couture.” I fell into a huge depression shortly after launching and pulled away from fashion all together to focus on my mental health and my family. In 2012, when Instagram became more popular, I started following different plus bloggers such as The Curvy Fashionista and My Curves and Curls. Week after week, I would scroll through to see these fashionable fearless women stylishly grace my screen with inspiring fashion looks, and it inspired me in 2013 to launch my very own fashion and style blog.
Do you blog full-time, for fun, as a hobby? Share your evolution!
Right now, I blog for pure enjoyment, but my goal is to truly gain an understanding of the art that is social media influence and to utilize it to inspire budding fashionistas globally! I can not begin to count the endless number of women who still feel hopeless and disconnected with style and fashion due to their size, and I want to use my knowledge and resources to help break that chain of disparity.
What is your favorite asset? Your legs, arms, waist? How do you play that up?
At the moment, I am really falling in love with my legs. I didn’t show much appreciation for them in my younger days, but since hitting my 30s and having the opportunity to dabble in retro-inspired looks like textured mini skirts, thigh high boots and cropped pants, I can honestly say I am pleased to see how each of these fashion items play well and compliment my stems in my personal style posts.
What are the challenges, if any, you face regarding being tall and plus size?
I stand 5’10 and wear a dress size of 18/20. The common challenge I find is with sleeves or pant length. I am very limited on where I can purchase a jacket or a pair of jeans. Unfortunately, many brands still stereotype plus size woman only as short, and I see that mostly when I go shopping. Because of that fact I have turned to a lot of indie designers to help fill my style need when the major brands fall short (No pun intended)
What’s your favorite thing about being tall and plus size?
My favorite thing about being tall is that is has opened me up to many modeling opportunities in the past and present which broadens my earning opportunities. As a single mom, that can never be a bad thing.
What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger?
My favorite thing about being a blogger is that I have countless opportunities to lend my voice to a battle with society that is far from over. Plus size fashion has come a long way over the last decade and for that I am truly grateful, but there is still so much more work and knowledge needed surrounding this industry. I have an opportunity to custom make a hub that connects with people on a global platform to join the movement that inspires change – that excites me the most.
Who/what are your favorite designers/brands?
I am a huge fan of indie designers at the moment, so fashion houses like Jibri, Pheline Design, and Z by Zevarra have my complete attention at the moment, but I must say Eloquii has been tugging at my purse strings in the most recent months too. I am obsessed with a few of their dresses from the Holiday 2015 collection.
Describe your personal style.
I was once affectionately called a style chameleon from a local fashion publication here in Toronto, Canada where I am from, and I think that is actually a great way to describe my personal style aesthetic. I am not predictable and my style fluctuates with my mood. I have days where I am serving “Olivia Pope” chic and others where I just want to be a bohemian goddess. My style is a huge part of my personal and daily expression soto define my look with only a single description to me wouldn’t do it justice.Which bloggers inspire you? Plus or straight size! Any bloggers currently on your radar?
The bloggers with whom I am currently obsessed at the moment would be Soraya from Style is My Thing. She seriously can do no wrong! I am also a huge fan and friend of Mo from Miss Lion Hunter. Her eclectic fuse of vintage and prints is unmatched, and there is simply no one like her in the industry right now.
What do you think about where plus size fashion is today versus a few years back?
I will say that plus size fashion has come a long way in terms of trend representation, size diversity and options. We are making enough noise, and brands are finally listening, as they should be. Years ago it was hard to find current trends in a size 18. We would have to settle for something floral, unflattering in fit, and most likely polyester. Though in my opinion accessibility is still an issue, I can appreciate the strides that are being made by retailers and designers.
Are you working on anything or have anything to share? Anything else you want The Curvy Fashionista’s readers to know?
I do have a Youtube channel which I upload every Thursday. Find me as “The Stylish Reid” or here. I also have my own skirt line of beautiful mini, maxi, and midi African print skirts for sale on the “shop” portion of my Blog, http://www.thestylishreid.com/shop-stylish/.
Lastly, what does Curvy.Confident.Chic mean to you?
When I hear the words “Curvy. Confident and Chic,” to me it sounds like a person who is unapologetic in their truest form and not afraid to embrace and celebrate their curves with style.
