How long have you been blogging?
I have been blogging for about six years now. It feels amazing to say that, even though I took a break in between to raise my son. It’s funny how time flies, because instead of him kicking my ribs while I blogged, now he sits right next to me on his tablet imitating what I do when I’m knocking out posts on my laptop.
What or who inspired you to become a fashion blogger? What led you to it?
Before starting my career as a personal style blogger, I was a self-conscious freshman in college who just went natural. At this time, I was attending a predominantly white institution and the other brown girls like me had relaxers and long tresses, and I felt like a chubby black sheep. So, instead of mimicking what I saw on campus, I turned to Tumblr and started creating content that expressed my interest in fashion, runway shows and alternative style. Blogging was an outlet for me to release my fears and reservations about being different and encouraged me to love myself, curves and all.
But, the real beauty began when I saw Gabi of GabiFresh, formerly, Young, Fat and Fabulous, on Forever21’s website celebrating the relaunch of Forever21+. After seeing how confident and self-assured she was, this encouraged me to create my second blog, Classic.Raw.Beauty. I wanted to create an outlet for young women, like me, who struggled with self-esteem issues and who wanted to learn how to be confident. Five years later, I am running a new blog with a new focus, and I could not be happier!
Do you blog full-time, for fun, as a hobby? Share your evolution!
I am an accidental full time blogger. Even though I had dreams of blogging full time, I felt like it would never happen because I wasn’t strong enough. This past October, I told myself that it was time for me to teach my son the importance of hard work and turning my dream into a reality … I picked up and left our home in North Carolina and drove to Dallas, TX to begin a new life. It has been less than a month, but I am learning the ropes and working hard to network and expand my brand presence across different social platforms. Honestly, it has not been an easy transition but I have an amazing family who believe in my vision. Turning my hobby into a career has been a confidence booster for me!
What is your favorite asset? Your legs, arms, waist? How do you play that up?
My favorite assets are my legs! I love to show them off by wearing tailored-fit skirts and dresses.
What are the challenges, if any, you face regarding being plus size?
As a young girl, I was always teased for being more plump than other little girls my age. Simply put, kids and adults (too) can be super cruel when they do not understand a certain topic or sub-culture. But, as an adult I have learned how to slay despite the ugly remarks I may hear every now and them (but, very rarely). With that being said, I have a few gripes with outside perceptions of the plus size community. One of those being that there is this perception that we are all one-dimensional figures who want basic pieces to satisfy us. The beauty of being a part of the plus size community would be that we are totally different and love expressing our personalities in many different ways. We are so diverse in ethnicities, backgrounds and interests … I LOVE that!
What’s your favorite thing about being plus size?
One my favorite things about being plus size is showing my readers that thrifting and vintage shopping are just not for straight sizes. Through my blog and social media, I always share the importance of being open to different experiences and new ways of thinking about plus size fashion.
Who/what are your favorite designers/brands?
I am an avid thrift shopper so this is a difficult question, but I adore the new look and feel for Eloquii and Lane Bryant. But, Forever21+ will always be bae when I shop retail!
Describe your personal style.
I am very eclectic. I love mixing and matching vintage pieces with modern basics to create quirky and sultry outfits that are totally unexpected! Just this past weekend, I rocked a vintage beaded top with a pair of Forever21 highwaist jeans …it was a hit!
Which bloggers inspire you? Plus or straight size! Any bloggers currently on your radar?
Gabi of GabiFresh remains one of my favorite bloggers of all time, but as of late, Nicolette Mason has been giving me life! I love how she uses her femininity to style chic outfits.
What do you think about where plus size fashion is today versus a few years back?
Plus size fashion today is super innovative, with high-fashion appeal! I mean, come on, we are FAR away from floral babydoll dresses and basic cotton leggings that retailers use to call fashion. We are finally being recognized as the dope girls on the block!
What do you think, or hear from readers, is one of the biggest myths about plus size fashion?
One of the biggest myths about being plus size is that we are all shaped alike! This drives me nuts. Just like any other group of people, we come in different sizes, shapes and heights.
Are you working on anything or have anything to share? Anything else you want The Curvy Fashionista’s readers to know?
I want you TCF readers to know that you all are so supportive and inspire me every day! From your beautiful comments to your enthusiasm when we produce new content, you all keep us motivated and excited to be better bloggers every day!
What’s your favorite thing about being a TCF contributor?
First and foremost, I love working alongside Marie; guys, she is dope (but I am sure you know that)! I adore getting a chance to create content that is both trendy and useful for your wardrobes. Contributing to TCF has allowed me to make some amazing friends and new readers. It’s all love here, and that’s a powerful thing.
Lastly, what does Curvy.Confident.Chic mean to you?
Curvy.Confident.Chic means that I am powerful and self-assured on who I am as a woman! With that empowerment I use as motivation to inspire other women!
