Last week we brought you Canadian blogger Caterina of Caterina Moda, and this week, we head back to the States to catch up with petite plus blogger Darlene of Suit, Heels, and Curves. Darlene isn’t new to The Curvy Fashionista. We featured her as a breakout personal style blogger of 2015, and Darlene certainly hasn’t let her momentum slow. This blogger is on fire, offering up fabulous ideas for what to wear to the office, on the weekends, and more. She is a plus size blogger YOU NEED TO KNOW!!!
Meet Darlene of Suit, Heels, and Curves!!
Blog: Suits, Heels and Curves
Location: New York
How long have you been blogging? 2.5 yearsWhat or who inspired you to become a fashion blogger? What led you to it?
I developed Suits, Heels and Curves because I felt there was a lack of workwear-related fashion featured in the plus size market. While crop tops and bodycon dresses are hot fashion pieces, they did not address my needs working in the corporate field. I wanted to see power suits, work-to-night options and features that addressed the dos and don’ts of office wear. But the more I searched for such an avenue online, the more I noticed that my options were as slim as my suit shopping choices as a plus size woman. So I decided to launch SHC.
Do you blog full-time, for fun, as a hobby? Share your evolution!
I will say that I started blogging just for fun, but it quickly has turned into my second full-time job. If I am not at the office or traveling for work, I am home on my computer writing posts, editing pictures and planning for what’s next. Along with SHC, I also run www.IAmRedefiningHealthy.com and am part of the Instagram Wives. So as you can see, I stay very busy and am always working.
What is your favorite asset? Your legs, arms, waist? How do you play that up?
Hmm, that is a tricky question. Initially, I would say my freckles because they are unique to me and all the women in my family have them. I feel like they are that one special thing that unites us. In terms of my body, it’s hard to pick one because I love my curves and all that comes with it.What are the challenges, if any, you face regarding being plus size?
I truly hate the assumption that because you are plus size you are unhealthy. I started IAmRedefiningHealthy.com to help show the world that there is more to me than the size of my jeans. I want to encourage women like me to celebrate their gorgeous curves and honor their bodies. I want our nation to truly address the hate and bullying that we face day in and day out, and I want our fashion community to stop thinking about us as an afterthought.
What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger?
My favorite thing is the amazing people that I meet who continue to inspire me to do more. It is my readers who send me their stories, the brands that truly get it and get who we are as plus size women, and lastly, the amazing friendships I’ve made with other bloggers. It’s like I have this amazing sisterhood of plus size ladies, and that’s pretty cool!
Who/what are your favorite designers/brands?
Oh boy, now that’s a hard one. Now, while I am a big in-store shopper, I will say that some of my favorite stores right now are online. I am a big fan of fullbeauty.com. I love that they are kind of a one-stop shop. I can get shoes, clothes, and accessories all for one shipping fee, plus they carry many of my favorite brands like Violeta by Mango, Torrid, City Chic and Fashion to Figure so I don’t have to go to multiple websites. I am also a big fan of Eloquii and think they are a brand that truly gets plus size women and understands that we love great fashion just like any other girl.Describe your personal style.
I love fashion that is easy and classic and pulling together looks that any girl can replicate. As a native New Yorker, I tend to lean into black a lot but the Latina in me loves colors. While I don’t play by the fashion rules I know what works for me and my shape and height (I am only 5’3″).
Which bloggers inspire you? Plus or straight size! Any bloggers currently on your radar?
Well honestly, we could be here all day, but on the short list is La Pecosa Preciosa for her girlie-girl style, The Jenesaisquoi because she always look so darn cool in her pictures, Curvy Girl Chic because she was one of the first bloggers I started to follow, and in my head we are besties, I Am Beauticurve because she is gorgeous and her style is effortless, and Fearlessly Just Me because she goes beyond fashion and talks about the stuff that is truly affecting our community.
What do you think about where plus size fashion is today versus a few years back?
The plus size fashion industry has come a long way, and I feel that is important to stop and acknowledge that and celebrate it. While we still have a long road to travel, more options become available every day and the fashion community can no longer ignore our needs. What do you think, or hear from readers, is one of the biggest myths about plus size fashion?
One of the biggest myths I hear is that plus size fashion is too expensive. Now, there are a lot of higher end brands and retailers that price at the higher end of the spectrum. However, there are great fashion options at all price points. The great thing is that today we have so many more options than we had a few years ago. With coupons and promos, a higher end store now becomes attainable to average women. Plus, with discount retailers offering more plus size pieces, all you need is a little time and patience to find the right look.
Are you working on anything or have anything to share?
I am working on a few big projects that I can’t share as of yet so stay tuned to www.suitsheelsandcurves and especially my social media and SnapChat (SuitsCurves) for full details. One thing that I can announce is the Redefining Healthy Conference & Expo in New York, March 11. The Redefining Healthy Conference is an all-day event that focuses on how wellness, beauty, fashion and self-love can strengthen your inner core and help you build a healthier version of yourself.Lastly, what does Curvy.Confident.Chic mean to you?
It means being the most authentic version of yourself you can possibly be.
