There are women all around us who inspire, motivate, and give us the drive to push forward. For me, this is my truth. As a blogger, as a businesswoman, hell, just as a woman, a lot of what I have done, accomplished, and created is drawn and motivated by the strength of the women who have come and gone in my life. So when Zenni Optical reached out to me, to acknowledge and recognize the women leaders who have the courage and strength to get the job done, I immediately knew that I had to be a part of this.
And who better to call out and recognize than my mother? Even better, my mother hits a milestone birthday next week, so in some ways, this is part of my gift to her!
You see, I am a child of a bad ass single mother, who was in the Navy for 23 years. I never understood my passion for wanting to be surrounded by strong women, to pour into others, and to lift up my fellow sisters, up until two or three years ago! I have always surrounded myself, both intentionally and subconsciously, with women who are clear and intentional on their goals, aspirations, and what they want out of life. And this started with my mother…
There are a few things that my mother taught me that, now as I am firmly in my mid-thirties, have only come to light, make more sense, and that keep me grounded and today I wanted to share a few of these lessons with you!
The Most Important Lesson My Mother Taught Me
Take yourself off the clearance rack.
It took me awhile to understand this, because for me, I was always a people pleaser. I care about what others feel and think, I care about keeping the peace, I care a lot about a lot of things and so it didn’t click for me. However, over these past two years, as I have been kind of going through a personal transition and grow into this woman my mother raised me to be, I now understand this to mean, Valuing Myself.
That meant relationships, that meant partnerships, and that meant doing what was best for me. To take myself off the clearance rack, I had to stop putting other people’s needs before mine, at the detriment of myself. I had to learn how to process that it was still okay to care, still okay to love, it was still okay to be considerate; but I had to learn how to do it and create boundaries for myself.
If that meant me working with Brand X, I had to be okay with walking away from the situation if it didn’t benefit me. If that meant engaging in a romantic relationship and not liking how I was being treated, to be vocal about it! If that meant wanting more out of life, I had to give myself permission to go for it. And honey, I am!
There are so many other ways that this mindset translates into my life, but when it comes to “not being on the clearance rack” I equate this to learning how to love, value, and respect myself and it’s through this, that I am more confident and self-assured in what I am doing, where I want to go, and how I want to get there… unapologetically.
I find it funny how I am in this space, reflecting upon the lessons that my mom has shown me. It’s no wonder why I find myself drawn to women, who are quite self-assured, self-confident, self-motivated and self-sufficient… Their energy is infectious and refreshing and inspiring!
And you know what? This lesson is only amplified by my grandmother, my sister, my aunties, my cousins and my friends; all of whom I draw strength from! This is sooo real for me and part of the reason why I had to participate in this post with Zenni Optical recognizing inspirational women leaders… it also doesn’t hurt that I am a proud member of #teamfoureyes!
