Fashion has always fascinated me from a young age, but it wasn’t always easy to be fashionable.  It was not until I decided to embrace myself at any size when I turned 30. I wanted to challenge my perception of what I could or could not wear as a plus sized girl. I sorely needed a change and my fellow plus size ladies in Asia needed it too.  There was a lack of representation for us here. I went online and found this amazing plus size community on Instagram, Beaucoo, Tumblr – bloggers, activists, clothing stores, models – it was like a new world unfolded right in front of me! I started to get my husband to snap pictures of me in some of my favorite outfits and 6 months later, I decided to start a fashion to blog as a better platform to showcase my fashion pursuits and to have fun with fashion.

What are the challenges, if any, you face in being petite and plus-size?
Palazzo pants make me feel like I’m sweeping the floor, and they come up a little too high-waisted. Skinny jeans tend to look bunched up at the calves. Maxi dresses are the funniest – I just feel like I’m sinking in all that fabric!

I am admittedly still a little shy about showing my legs off above the knee, so it’s convenient to have skirts, playsuits, mini dresses falling a little lower since I am petite. Longer tops can be multifunctional as tunics or even dresses, or I can tuck them under a skirt.

What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger?  A petite-plus fashion blogger?
Being a blogger has given me the opportunity to make so many like-minded friends locally and across the globe. It has given me a chance to belong somewhere with people with whom I can identify. It has also given me a voice to help reach out to girls who may have struggled, like I once did, with their bodies and fashion choices. When someone stumbles across my blog and thanks me for helping them get past their fear of trying something new because they’re not slim or tall, it just fuels my passion to keep at this.

At the moment, I wear a lot of clothing from ASOS Curve, Forever 21+, ModCloth and BooHoo.com. ASOS Curve  is affordable and has a wide range of styles for my size UK18 silhouette. Forever 21+ is chock-full of fun and vibrant styles that I love. ModCloth feeds my love for vintage style, and I love the feel of the clothing from BooHoo.com. I am very fussy about texture and whether it will help me withstand the heat in perennial summery Singapore. I would really love to sample clothing from Zelie for She, Youtheary Khmer, Simply Be and Domino Dollhouse in the near future. I’m always keen to try new stores and styles.

Describe your personal style.
I would call it eclectic and sassy.  My style cannot be pigeonholed into a specific genre, because my taste is constantly evolving. I always believe in dressing up with a dash of sass to make a statement as a plus sized girl.

I absolutely love Glam by Runa, a fellow Asian plus size blogger. Leandra Madine of Man Repeller is my straight sized fashion rebel icon. Rebequita Rose, Zaftig Times, Mixed Fat Chick, Jay Miranda, Curves and Chaos are a few plus size bloggers that constantly give me inspiration! There are so, so many bloggers that I adore.

Anything else you want The Curvy Fashionista’s readers to know?
I earnestly believe that everyone has a beauty and charm about them, no one size or color or look can monopolize all that beauty out there. We were created imperfect, and that is a thing of beauty in itself. Fashion isn’t stifling just because one is plus sized.  It can be a world of possibilities if you choose to look beyond your comfort zone. Like I always say on my blog – Stay awesome my folks and remember, your lumps, bumps, tiger stripes, dimples and curves become you. So own them!
